Development of Device FE 404 Since approximately April 1962, VEB Funkwerk Koepenick has been working on the development of Device_FE 404 on order of the Ministry of the Interior and under the supervision of the State Security Service. Allegedly, East German national armed organiza- tions are to be equipped with this device. In july4962, the de- velopment of the device was to be completed; several other VEB's participated in the development of individual parts. Officially the device is called FE 404; unofficially it is referred to various, as a disaster-warning and communications signal, as well as an air- warning signal and as a disaster-alarm signal-receiver (Katastrophen- Warn-und Meldegeraet- Luftwarngeraet; or Katastrophen- Einsatz- Alarmempfaenger). 2. Technical Data The device was to be manufactured in two variants: a. Stationary (See Attachment) b. Portable; with transistorized circuit and subminiature tubes: The design and Zharacteristics of the device permit the long-dis- tance relay of a network of several stationary individual stations with a number of transmitter and receiver centers. The portable devices are intended for use in case the stationary installations should cease to function.
