TURNU SEVERIN is a district capital (RLSEDINTA D= RAION) and
is located in the province (RSGIUNE) of CRAIOVA. It has a
pernnaaent population of about 34, 000 and another S, 000-0, 000
cornnnute daily to work in the city. Austrians who ca=ne to brw-
about 50 years ago in, order to work on the coastructiM of
the shipyards constitute approximately 10 per coat of the
population, Macedonians and Bulgarians make up assdsr
2 per cent each, and the others are R.umaniaas. The population
in 1940 was only around j2, 00043, 000, the growth siaao then
being due primarily to two reasons:

centres caused by the government's. agricultural
policies as a result of which many farmers wit to

ADRIAN when coming from down-town. It consists of
50-60 men and is equipped with four fire-trucks (Noe 58).
c. The Garrison HQ and a regiment of Frontier Onarde
(REGLMENT DE GRANICLRI) oc,:upy a number of barracks
north of the road leading to CRAIOVA. (NO. 60),
d. An artillery regiment (REGIMENT DE ARTILZRIZ)
is camped in barracks in the western part of the city,
north of the landing field (No. 61)
e. An atomic air-raid shelter is located on the left aide
of STRADA STEFAN CEL MARE when coming toon town, opposite the Orthodox Church cemetery. It was
built around 1957 and is surrounded by a wooden fs about
4 m. high and topped with another 0.5 m. of barbsdrwire
