Timisoara, a provincial capital (Resedinta De Regiune), has a popula- tion of about 146,000. The population in 1940 was 110,000. This increase in population resulted from local industrial development, the growth of public institutions and the trend towards urbanization on the part of the rural population. The inhabitants are mostly of four ethnic groups: Rumanians, Swabian Germans, Hungarians, and Serbs. 2. Alea Ateriele C.F.R. Bulevardul Idanov Piata Roosevelt a:.. The provincial Council` is located in a five-story building on the left side of Bulevardul 23 August , coming from the center of town. The construction of this building was begun during the war years but was not completed until after the war. It was originally intended to house the Prefectura, and it houses, at present, the central loudspeaker station. b. The Municipal Council is located in the former Victor Babes secondary school on Bulevardul Nicos Beloianis, opposite the Maxim Gorky Cinema. c. The Provincial Militia is located in two former private dwellings on Splaiul Tudor Vladimirescu at the corner of Strada Iosif Gall. These were formerly three-story buildings, but half a story was added to each. d. The City Militia is located on the left side of Strada Rozalia as one walks from Bulevardul Mihai Viteazul to Strada Romulus. e. The Provincial Securitate is located in a number of former private houses on the left side of Bulevardul Nicos Beloianis as one comes from the Maxim Gorky Cinema. It is surrounded by a high concrete fence. f. An unidentified building is located in the area bounded by Strada Cluj, Bulevardul Eroilor, Strada Nistrului and Strada Siretului. This one- story building, about 15 by 20 meters, has a number of underground floors. It is generally believed that this building is used for the storage of top-secret documents or as an air raid shelter. g. The Telephone Exchange is located in the building on Bulevardul Lenin. The city has automatic telephone equipment and maintains wireless contact with Bucharest. Telephone numbers consist of four digits. h. The Central Post and Telegraph Office is located on Bulevardul 23 August at the corner of Bulevardul Lenin. The same building also houses a technical secondary school for wireless-telegraphists. i. The regional, provincial and city law-courts, the prosecutor's offices and the notary public's offices are located on Strada Ghiorghi Dimitrov at the corner of Strada Popasapca. This building, popularly known as Palatul Dicasteria, is L-shaped, four stories high, and has three entrances. It also houses the income-tax offices of the First, the Second, and the Fifth Wards. The prison is located at the end of Strada Popasapca on the left side of the street when coming from downtown. A military prison was formerly located there. k. Provincial and city Party Committees are located on Strada Marasesti opposite the Rumanian Opera House, in an eight-story building, 20 by 30 meters, which formerly housed the German Bank and the "Central" boarding house. 1. The Provincial and City UTM Committees are located on Bulevardul 23 August opposite the Provincial Council. in. The Pioneers House is located next to the UTM Committees. n. District Party and UTM Committees are located in the former "Madosz" building between the mental and ear, nose and throat hospitals. o. Provincial Trade Union Offices are located in the former Crucea Alba private hospital on Strada Ilie Pintilie. p. The Third Ward Income-Tax Office is located in the former Ardeleana bank. q. Fourth Ward Income-Tax Offices are located on the left side of Bulevardul Jdanov when coming from Bulevardul Maresalul Tolbuchin. !4. Banks are located as follows: a. State Bank: One building is located in the former National Bank building on Bulevardul 23 August at the corner of Strada Popasapca. Almost direct- ly opposite, on the other side of Bulevardul 23 August, is the other building of the State Bank. b. The Investment Bank is located on Strada Eminescu. c. The Agricultural Bank is located on Piata Libertatii. d. The Savings Bank is located next to the Agricultural Bank. 5. Military and Para-I41ilitary installations are as follows: a. Fire Brigade: One barracks is located on the right side of Bulevardul 6 Martie, when coming from Piata Kutl, past Strada Vacarescu. Another is located at the end and on the left side of Strada Marasesti when coming from Bulevardul 30 Decembrie. A third is located on Strada Kunz opposite the thermal power station.. b. The Provincial District and City military commissariats are located on Bulevardul 30 Decembrie at the corner of Bulevardul V. I. Lenin and Bulevardul Nicos Beloianis. c. A number of barracks are located on both sides of Calea Aradului near the city limits. They are used by units of the infantry and the artillery and apparently also house the Second iiilitary District Headquarters. The barracks area and part of Calea Aradului are closed to civilian traffic. d. The Frontier Guards' barracks are located in the area south of the ceme- tery on Calea Aradului, west of the provincial broadcasting station and east of the a/m infantry and artillery barracks. The barracks of the signals unit of the Engineers Corps and the officers' club are located downtown on Strada Solderer at the corner of Piata Libertatii. f. The Garrison Headquarters and a lock-up for military personnel are located near the signals unit and club. g. The former Transilvania Barracks are used for a mechanized infantry unit's quarters, a home for the aged, and various warehouses. h. The firing ranges are in Padurea Verde. i. Officers' quarters have been erected on the left side of Calea Sagului when coming from downtown. They consist of a number of new four-story buildings. 6. Public buildings and services are as follows: a. The old thermal power station is located behind the Catholic church on Piata Poosevelt. b. The hydro-power station is located near the Strand. c. Timisoara is connected to the national electrical grid. One connecting station is located north of the railway tracks near Padurea Verde. Another station is adjacent to the sugar refinery in Fraidorf. The city uses current for illumination at three different voltages: 110 v. AC in the 2irst and Fifth Wards, 188 v. AC in the Third :lard, and 220 v. AC in the Second and Fourth Wards. There is no noticeabl; shortage of electricity in the city. d. The slaughter house has, within its same compound, an ice factory and a water tower. 7. Industrial plants are as follows: a. The Nicos Peloianis (formerly Prima Banat; formerly Dermata) shoe factory is located next to the Roman Catholic cemetery at the corner of No. 1 Decembrie and Stefan Cel Mare Streets. It produces various types of footwear and employs 500 to 600 workers. b. The Bela Drainer plastics factory is located in front of the above shoe factory and on the right side of Bulevardul Eroilor when coming from downtown. This is a new plant, built by prisoners, which employs approximately 100 workers. One of its products is shoes for export. c. A shoe-polish factory is located on Bulevardul Eroilor at the corner of Strad-a.='istrului. This is a new plant. d. The LIP (Incustria Jetalurgica Banateana) metal ware plant is located on Calea C.l'.P. at the corner of Strada Dimitrie Bolintineanu. This plant occupies a large area stretching to Strada 13 Decembrie and employs re than 1,000 workers. The plant's foundry for non-ferrous metals is located on Strada Ciprian Porumbescu and its iron foundry on Strada Telergrafulul. P. A factory for stockings that was formerly called the Standard factory is located opposite the above iron foundry. f. 'TheIndikstria Linei wool spinning mill is located at its pre-war site on Piata De Fin. A factory for the manufacture of lacquers is located on the left bank of the Bega Canal and behind Piata De Fin when coming from downtown. h. A soap factory is adjacent to the above lacquer factory. i. The former Florida plant for tricot goods is located between the lacquer plant and Piata De Fin. j. The Stefan Plavat (formerly Flit) shoe factory is located on Calea Dorobantilor at the corner of Calea Lipovei. k. The Incustria Textila Banateana (formerly Romitex) textile plant is located in the northern end of the city on the right side of Calea Aradului. 1. The Flectro-iotorul plant is located at the foot and on the right side of Bulevardul Republicei when coming from the big railway station* in. A tobacco factory is located on Strada Baritiu. n. A match factory is located on Splaiul Nicolae Titulescu. o. A brick factory is located on the right side and at the end of Calea Sagului when coming from downtown. p. A factory for the manufacture of upholstery fabrics (formerly owned by Peter Herzog) is located on Strada Glad at the corner of Calea Sagului. q. A su{-ar refinery is located in Fraidorf. r. A nla t for the production of prefabricated building components is locat- ed north of the railway tracks just before Calea Aradului turns northward. s. A noodle factory that was formerly a military bakery is located immediate- ly after the above building components plant when coming from the railway station. t. Large railway repair shops, erected after World War II, are located north of the railway tracks and the freight railway station in the Second Ward. The old railway repair shops behind the big railway station in the Iose- fin .'ard carry out only minor repairs now. 8. Railway information is as follows: a. The big railway station, which was badly damaged by bombing during World :ar II, was renovated and enlarged after the war. b. The railway station in the Second lard is used mainly for loading and unloading freight. c. The provincial railway directorate is located on Splaiul Tudor Vladimir- escu at the corner of Strada 6 Martie. d. The provincial directorate for railway commerce and freight is on Piata Kutl near the vocational secondary school for Railway workers. e. The railway workers' restaurant and club are on Strada 13 Decembrie at the corner of Splaiul Tudor Vladimirescu. Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/11/15: CIA-RDP80T00246AO56000230001-4 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/11/15: CIA-RDP80T00246AO56000230001-4 -6- 1) To Arad, at approximately the following times: 0700, 0830 (an express; goes to Cluj and Oradea), 1200, 1500, 1630, 1800, 2000, 2300 and 0100-0200 hours. 2) To Oradea, four to five passenger trains daily. 3) To Bucharest: Two regular passenger trains daily (at approximately 07100 and 1800 hours) and two to three express trains daily - one before 1000 hours via Pitesti and one before 2200 hours via Rosiorii De Vede; sometimes there is a third train in the afternoon. 9. The provincial broadcasting station is located on the right side of Calea Aradului next to the Frontier Guards' barracks. Its studios and the jamming station are located on Strada Cluj at the corner of Strada Arlesul. 10. Timisoara's water source is located about 20 kilometers outside the city in the direction of Ghiroda. In the summer the city suffers from a severe shortage of water, felt particularly by those living in flats above the second story. A number of water towers are located on the left side of Strada Gelu when coming from the railway station. Another water tower is located within the area of the slaughter house and ice-factory. 11. Theaters, cinemas, etc., are as follows: a. The State Theater and the Rumanian Opera House are still located on Strada iarasesti at the corner of Strada Alba Iulia. Performances are held every evening and alternate between operas and plays. b. The Stefan Plavat State Theater for both the Hungarian and German languages is on Strada Alba Iulia. c. There is an auditorium for the presentation of films and plays in the railwatr workers' club on Strada Adolf Vertes. The building was built by the Germans during World War II for use as a cultural center for the German Rumanians' Fascist Party. d. The Maxim Gorky (formerly the Capitol) cinema is located on Bulevardul Nicoseloianis and can accommodate about 1,200 people. During the summer performances are held in the cinema's garden. e. The Tineretului (formerly Thalla, formerly Scala), cinema is located on 3trada Adolf Vertes at Bulevardul 30 Decembrie and can accommodate about 4100 persons. f. The Alexandru Sahia (formerly the Apollo) cinema is located on Strada 3 August at the corner of Strada Kuunz and contains about 400 seats. g. The Victoria cinema is located on Piata Nicolae Balcescu and has 200- 300 seats. h. Another cinema (name unknown) is located opposite the Third Clinic on Strada Vacarescu and can accommodate 400 to 500 persons. It was recently renovated and enlarged. i. There is a cinema in the Fifth Ward; exact location unknown. The summer cinema for railway workers is located near the railway station. k. The Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (formerly the Corso) cinema is located on Strada 13 Decembrie and has about 200 seats. 1. All cinemas hold performances at 1500, 1700, 1900 and 2100 hours daily. 12. Medical institutions are as follows: a. A large childrens' hospital and clinic is located on Bulevardul Re- publicei at the corner of Strada Is Cavaleriei. Opposite it is the Childrens' Home which cares for and educates orphans and abandoned children up to school-age. c. The surgical department of the childrens' hospital is located on Strada Ilie Pintilie at the corner of Strada Is Cavaleriei in the former PAPC private Hospital. d. The former Freund Hospital on Bulevardul 23 August, at the corner of Bulevardul Nicos Beloianis, is now a neurological hospital. e. The ear, nose and throat diseases hospital is located on Bulevardul 23 August before the neurological hospital, when coming from downtown. f. The former Sick Fund building on Bulevardul 23 August now contains the First Dispensary, a small hospital for mouth and scalp diseases, a clinic for students and the city's dental clinic. There is a state hospital on the left side of Strada Marasesti, when coming from the State Theater. h. The First Clinic is located in the former officers' hospital on Calea Aradului. It consists of two large buildings, four to five stories high, which were renovated and enlarged, and is equipped with modern equipment imported from both East and West Germany. i. The Second Clinic and the Second Dispensary are located in the former Bega Hospital on Bulevardul Victor Babes. j. The Third Clinic is on Strada Vacarescu. Adjacent to it is the Third Dispensary. k. The TB hospital is in the vicinity of Padurea Verde. 1. The hospital for contagious diseases is near the TB hospital. m. The TB clinic for the observation of TB suspects is located on the right side of Bulevardul Nicos Beloianis, when coming from the Maxim Gorky cinema. It contains 15 to 20 beds. n. The railway workers' Hospital is located on Strada 13 Decembrie opposite the railway station. o. The Railway workers' clinic is on Splaiul Tudor Vladimirescu near Bulevardul 6 Martie. p. Gynaecological and maternity hospital is located on Bulevardul 6 Martie at the corner of Strada Ion Ghica. The building was built by the Joint Distribution Committee after World War II, but immediately after its completion, was nationalized and equipped for its new purposes r. There is a gynaecological hospital in Strada Odobescu opposite the above institution on Bulevardul 6 Martie. s. The military hospital is located at its old site on Strada Marasesti, past the State Hospital which is on the same street, when coming from the State Theater. Until the evacuation of Soviet troops from Timisoara, half the hospital was set aside for their use; it has since returned to the full control of the Rumanian army. t. The provincial epidemiological directorate is opposite the institute for the treatment of children suffering from poliomyelitis. 13. Institutions of Higher education are as follows: a. The Upper School of Agriculture includes the Agro-Technical and Zoo- Technical Institutes, and is located in a former elementary school on Splaiul Tudor Vladimirescu, opposite the railway workers' clinic. Its laboratories are in the former police building on Piata Unirii. b. The former Loyd building on Bulevardul 30 Decembrie, at the corner of Bulevardul Republicei, now houses the faculty of industrial chemistry (second and third stories) and the rectorate (fourth story) of the Polytechnical Institute. This faculty has its laboratories on Strada Telbis. c. The Polytechnical Institute's library, the electro-technical faculty and the faculty of civil and industrial construction are located on Bule- vardul Politee.nicei. d. The Faculty of Mechanics and some of the electronics laboratories are located on the left side of Bulevardul Nlihai Viteazul when coming from the Bega Canal. e. Other laboratories of the Institute are located near the Stadionul Tineretului and are bounded by Bulevardul Victor Babes, Bulevardul Nihai Viteazul and Strada Traian Lalescu. f. The Institute of ?Iedicine and Pharmacy is located near the provincial council. g. The Peadogogical Institute for training secondary school teachers is located on Strada Traian Lalescu and contains the following departments: Mathematics, physics, Russian, Rumanian and, possibly, German. 14. Students' quarters, etc., are as follows: a. Quarters for 7irls studying at the Polytechnical Institute are located. in the former 7eutsches Haus on Bulevardul Politecnicei. b. Students' quarters are located on Bulevardul Mihai Viteazul at the corner of Strada Traian Lalescu, between the canteen and the quarters of the teaching staff. d. i?iore students' quarters are located on Piata Sfintu Gheorghe at the corner of Strada Voltaire. e. A students' dormitory is located on Strada Ungureanu, opposite the community center. f. Quarters for girl students at the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy are located near the Institute and behind the provincial council. g. Quarters for students at the Upper School of Agriculture are located on Strada 13 Decembrie. 15. Secondary schools are as follows: a. The former Diaconovici Loga secondary school for boys is now nailed after i:Icos Eeloianis and is located on the street of the same name, opposite the provincial Securitate. b. Secondary school No. 1 for girls is located in the former Carmen Sylva secondary school. c. Secondary School No. 2 for boys is the former Victor Babes school on Strada Telbis. d. The co-educational classical secondary school is housed in the former Notre Dame College on Bulevardul Jdanov. e. A co-educational merman-language secondary school is located on Strada Ion Uhica behind the classical secondary school. f. A technical secondary school for forestry is located in Padurea Verde. g. The central post office houses a technical secondary school for training radio-telegraphists. h. A technical secondary school for the textile industry is located in the former dormitory of the Carmen Sylva secondary school on Bulevardul V. I. Lenin. i. A technical secondary school for the training of physical training instructors is located on Bulevardul V. I. Lenin. The dormitories are in the same building. j. A technical secondary school for electro-technics is located opposite the school for physical training instructors in the former vocational school. k. A vocational school for the deaf, dumb and blind is located on Bule- vardul Nicos Beloianis in the former Ort vocational school which was established after `~-Iorld War II. 1. A school for sanitation technicians is located on Strada Solderer in the former i?otre Dame secondary school. The school for railway technicians is on Piata Kutl. n. The technical secondary school for civil construction is on Bulevardul Jdanov, at the corner of Strada Brincoveanu. 16. Public transportation is as follows: There are ten tram and trolley-bus lines in Ti,,i_soara. The vehicles are kept in garages situated on both sides of Bulevardul Tache Ionescu near the Piata De Fin. Route details are as follows: a. Tram line c. 1: From the Strand to the bridge at Calea Dorobantilor and return via the same route. b. Tram line No. 2: The Iosefin railway station - Strada 13 Decembrie - 3 levardul Jdanov - Piata Kutl - Bulevardul 6 I4artie - Piata :aria - a3ulevar dul 6 artie (divided by the Piata Maria) - Traian bridge - L'ulevardul 30 Eecembrie - Strada Alba Iulia - Piata Libertatii - Piata Dfintu.l (aheorghe - Bulevardul 23 August - Strada 3 August - Piata Traian Strada 1aresal Jofres - Calea Dorabantilor - TB hospital, and return via the same route. c.
