1. Galati has a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants., most of whom are
Rumanians. Prior to World War II the population had already reached this
mark; many inhabitants left during the war and returned afterwards. The ,r---

2. The following are locations of public institutions in Galati:
a. The municipal council and the district council - on the left-hand
side of Strada Republicei, coming from the harbor, between Strada
Visinski and Strada 23 August, in the former Mihai Kogalniceanu high
school for girls (an L-shaped, single-story building).
b. The provincial council - nearly opposite the municipal council, in
a three-story building, the former Palat Administrativ.
c. The city law court - on the left-hand side of Strada Ostrovski,
coming from the harbor, in a former private single-story house.
d. The district and provincial law court - on Strada Nicolae Balcescu,
north of Strada 23 August, in a former private single-story villa
which atone time housed the Sailors' Club.
e. The provincial Securitate and Militia headquarters - on the right-
hand side of Strada Brailei, coming from the town ce?ter,past the
former Scoala Normala, in a large, three-story building, which was
erected in 1956-1958. The entrance to the Securitate is through the
left door and the entrance to the Militia is through the right door.
The building is surrounded by a low iron fence.
f. Another building housing Securitate offices - on the right-hand
side of Strada Republicei, coming from the harbor, corner of Strada
6 Martie, near the Episcopie Church, in a very large, former private
home. This building is surrounded by a high brick wall so that it
cannot be seen from the outside. Another wall was built between
this building and the church.

g. The Port Securitate and Militia - on the second floor of the building
housing the Provincial Directorate of River Navigation on the banks
of the Danube River. Also located in this building are the Port
Authority, the Hungarian shipping agency Mahart, the Soviet shipping
agency, S.D.G.P., the transport company Romtrans, and the Prod-
export company.
h. Regional Militia offices (among other locations) - on the right-
hand side of Strada Traian, coming from the town center,and on the
right hand side of Strada Dr. Rusel, coming from the port, corner of
Strada Daciana.
i. Civil defense courses are held by the Securitate in the former German
Vocational School on Strada Dobrogeanu Gherea.
3. The prison - in the northern section of Galati, on the right-hand
side of Strada Traian, coming from Piata Victoriei (saue...location as
in the past), in a large two or three-story building surrounded by
three concrete walls with metal gates. Around the outside wall
there are small houses, watch posts and a garden.
k. The city, provincial and district Party committees - in the former
Grand Hotel on Strada Republicei, corner of Strada Justitiei and
Strada Logofatul Taut.
1. The Communist youth organization (U.T.M-) - on the right-hand side
of Strada Republicei, coming from. the town center, past the Students'
Club, in a former private single-story house.
m. The provincial trade unions' offices - on Strada Gamulea, corner of
Strada Logofatul Taut, in a large, three-story building.
n. The editorial offices and the printing press of the paper published
by the provincial Party committee (Viata Noua) - on Strada Maior
Pavel Cacenco.
o. The central post office - at the beginning and on the right-hand side
of Strada Alexandru Sahai, coming from Strada Nicolae Balcescu, in
an old two-story building whose cellar also houses the parcel post
office.
The telephone exchange - next to the post office, in a modern, two-
story building. At present there are automatic telephones with four
digit numbers but it is planned to change them to five- or six-digit
numbers.
q. The radio amplifier station - on the first floor of a building which
houses on its groundfloor the State notary office, on Strada
Republicei opposite the municipal council..
3. The following are locations of military installations in Galati and
vicinity:
a. The Officers' Club - on the right-hand side of Strada Visinski,
coming from Strada Nicolae Balcescu, between Strada Carnabel and
Strada Nicolae Balcescu.
b. A Frontier Guard unit - in a wooden barracks in Larga village in the
direction of Reni.

d. Underground antiaircraft gun positions - in Piata Victoriei. Under-
ground military stores were also built there in 1958, and many
military trucks are seen in the area.
4. Details on medical institutions in Galati are as follows:
a. No. 1 State Hospital - located on Strada Traian, in the building of
the former Elisabeta Doamna Hospital. A very large hospital with
about 1,000 beds.
b. No. 2 State Hospital - in the building of the former Trancu-Iasi
Hospital, in the vicinity of Strada Brailei (exact location unknown).
This hospital has wards for almost all common. diseases.
c. No. 3 State Hospital (the maternity hospital) - located on Strada
Dumitru Chicus.
d. Children's Hospital is located on Strada Brailei, between the Secondary
School and the Securitate and Militia building. This is a one-story
building constructed after 1950.
e. The hospital for contagious diseases is located in the northern part
of Galati.
f. No. 1 dispensary is located in a large one-story building, formerly
a private home, on the right-hand side of Strada Republicei, coming
from the port, past the Students' Club.
g. No. 2 dispensary is located on Strada 13 Iunie, not far from the
Provincial Directorate of River Navigation.
h.. The children's dispensary and the Care of Mther and Child Center are
located on Strada 6 Martie, opposite Strada Nicolae Balcescu.
i. The blood bank is located on Strada 23 August, corner of Strada
Republicei, in an old, large, single-story building.
5. The following are locations of theaters and cinemas in Galati:
a. The State Theater and the auditorium of the Philharmonic Orchestra -
in the former Palat Cultural, on the left-hand side of Strada
Republicei, coming from the port, between Strada Visinski and Strada
Ostrovski, in a 500-seat hall. The building was renovated recently
and a municipal library has been opened on the first floor.
b. Opera and Ballet Theater - on Strada Puskin, near the public park, in
a building constructed in 1955 for the Shipyard Workers' Club. The
hall has 500 seats and there are performances every day.
c. The 1{hLinescu cinema (formerly Central, Olimpic) - on Strada Republicei,
between Strada Alexandra Sahia and Strada Maior Pavel Cacenco. It has
1,200 seats.
d. The Gorki cinema (formerly Odeon) - on Strada Republicei, between
Strada Maior Pavel Cacenco and Strada 23 August, with about 800 seats.
e. The Popular cinema (formerly Mixon) with 500 to 600 seats. A side-
walk connecting the Gorki and Popular cinemas is being paved.

f. The former ARO cinema on Strada Justitiei. This was the cinema
used by the Soviet Armed Forces during their stay in Galati and is
now closed; it is planned. to re-open it soon.
g. The former Lux cinema on Strada Brailei, corner of Strada Sfintu
Ilie, opposite Strada Barthou, was closed and a pq)er warehouse
opened in the building.
5. Banks in Galati are reported to be at the following locations:
a. The State Bank - in the former Banca Nationala on Strada Frater-
nitatii.
b. A Soviet-Ihmanian bank had been established in a former private bank
located on Strada Colonel Boyle, corner of Strada 13 Iunie 1916.
Later on it was liquidated and now the Investments Bank is located
there.
co The Agricultural Bank - in the former Banca De Credit, on Strada
Colonel Boyle, opposite the printing press.
d. The Savings Bank (CEC) and the Insurance Company (ADAS) - on
Strada Republicei, between the State notary office and the provincial
council.
6. Educational institutions in Galati._are located as follows:
a. In the former Notre Dame De Sion Institute are now housed:
1) The Technical Naval Institute
2) The Food Chemistry Institute
3) The Motor-Mechanical Institute
A secondary school also exists at the same location. The Students'
Club is located on Strada Republicei, near the UTM, in a former
private residence.
b. A co-education secondary school - in the former Vasile Alecsandri
school for boys, on Strada Nicolae Balcescu.
c. The secondary school for sanitation personnel - in the former
Institut Orthodox for Girls, on Strada Nicolae Balcescu, corner of
Strada Dobrogeanu Gherea.
d. The School for Land Amelioration - in the former commercial school
on Strada Dobrogeanu Gherea, corner of Strada Carnabel. It shares
the same yard with the school for sanitation personnel.
e. Secondary school - in the former Scoala Normala, on the right-hand
side of Strada Brailei, coming from the town center, before the
Children's Hospital.

7. The following are details on railway stations in Galati:
a. The passenger railway station is located at the beginning of Strada
Eliade;.Radulescu. During the war this station was badly damaged
and the station offices, a waiting room, a newspaper stand and a
post office are housed in a wooden structure.
b. No. 8 Goods Station (Gara De Marfuri No. 8) is at its former
location. Its designation "No. 8" does not indicate the number of
railway stations in Galati.
c. The goods unloading and transshipment station is at its former
location.
d. A station for changing wheels from broad to standard gauge is
located at Reni. There are oil pipelines connecting Reni to
Ploesti.
e. Another railway station, customs offices and a Frontier Guards unit,
as well as a small station for wheel changing are located in Larga
village near the bridge over the Prut River.
8. A bridge on the Prut River at Reni was opened on 23 August 1958. The
bridge is two kilometers long and built in two tiers. A broad-gauge
railway line is on the lower tier and a wide road for motor vehicles
is on the upper tier.
