Catalogue of Star Clusters and Associations
42 pp., 783 cards, (E) Kcs 140,-
This Catalogue is intended to be a convenient working-instru-
ment for cluster and association research. Convenience, in such
a case, must comprise easy accessibility, comprehensiveness and
reliability. The question of easy accessibility has been solved suc-
cessfully by presenting the Catalogue in the form of a card index.
Comprehensiveness has been achieved by collecting the material
from all the available/~sources. And reliability rests on the precision
of the quotation in the Catalogue and on a careful revision of the
proofs. The Catalogue consists of three parts, the first of which
comprises 576 open clusters on 600 cards marked OCL, the second
46 star associations on 47 cards marked Ass., and the third 117
globular clusters on 136 cards marked GCI. The first part was
prepared by G. Alter, the second by J. Ruprecht, and the third
by V. Vangsek. The cards include, in a very concise form, all the
available information, so far published, about the properties of
the objects: The first line-on each card contains the designations
of the object. The second line gives the positional data: equatorial
co-ordinates, Epoch 1900.0, precession in R. A. and Dec. for 50
years, galactic co-ordinates, Epoch 1900.0 and the cosines. The
third line contains the headings of 13 columns, corresponding to
the papers referred to and to the properties of the objects. They
comprise the year of publication, the author's name, the public-
ation, data about angular diameters, distances, linear diameters,
star numbers, star, magnitudes, colour indices, spectra, star po-
sitions, total magnitudes, and remarks. The character of the Cat-
alogue offers every possibility of extension, for every card can
be implemented by further entries, and a number of empty cards
are supplemented for such amplification. This publication appears
to' be the first attempt ever made, in natural science, at publishing
collected material in card form.

Surface Oxidization The monograph deals with problems connected with the cor-
of Metals and rosion of metals, which is one of the main problems of modern
Alloys in a Gaseous technology and is also important from an economic point of view.
Medium The author first reviews some laws of physics of solid matter,
the knowledge of which is a condition for the explanation of the
mechanisms of oxidization. He further describes the preparation
of samples and the methods employed in studying oxidization
experimentally. Then he explains the origin of layers of oxides
under different conditions. Explanations are based throughout
on the principles of modern physics of solid matter and theory
is always confronted with experiments. The book gives a com-
prehensive view of the whole complex of problems concerned
and may thus very well serve experts in the solution of special-
ized problems connected with the oxidization of metals; the
book is written comprehensibly and the mathematics required
is not too complicated, basic terms are explained in the first
chapters; the book also points out problems that have not quite
been solved and questions which are awaiting further research.

Principles of the The book aims at explaining the fundamental principles of
Solution of the theory of algebraic equations with one or more unknowns,
Equations and some methods of their numerical solution. The first part
of the book deals with the basic qualities of polynomes and the
solution of equations up to the fourth degree. The next part
deals with questions connected with the numerical solution of
equations. The last part contains the proof that equations of
the 5th degree are insoluble and further deals with the con-
struction of geometrical figures with ruler and compasses. The
book is accessible to a wide circle of readers due to its simple
and intelligible explanation of over 350 practical examples.

Neutrons With increasing scientific and technical applications of neu-
trons, their study became the object of a number of original
papers; thus a new field of physics was created, the physics
of neutrons. N. A. Vlasov's monograph contains a systematic
survey of that-field of physics. It informs the reader about the
fundamental qualities of neutrons, their sources, the methods
of registration and ways 'of mutual effect of neutrons and
matter; it does not deal with the-fission of heavy nuclei.'The
book originated from lectures delivered by the author at the
Leningrad University in the years 1946-1952; these were
supplemented by material, published up to 1954. It acquaints the
reader with. the fundamental and primary facts of the physics
of neutrons in the most accessible and illustrative way possible.
References to world literature are up to 1954 and an index is
attached.

(Cz), p. c. Kcs 16,70
The paper presents a survey of the results obtained so far in
the investigation of river terraces, i. e. early river deposits in
Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. The introductory chapters review
the theoretical questions such as the development of the in-
vestigation and its periodisation, the opinions on the origin
of terraces, the comparison with the main European rivers and
the author's evaluation of. the literature published up to the
present. The main part of this book deals with individual rivers,
chronologically summarising in briefest from various views and
citing the literature concerning each river in question; it in-
cludes comparative tables of the terraces according to the views
of individual specialists. The final part of the paper consists of
a comprehensive list of the literature studied, including papers
dealing with the problems of the river terraces in Bohemia, Mo-
ravia and Silesia, issued up to 1956; of the foreign literature
several papers are cited which are of importance in comparison
or solution of theoretical problems. The paper is supplemented
by numerous tables and maps, illustrating the present state and
the periodisation of the investigation of the river terraces of
the individual water courses.

Barrandian. Geology
of the Silurian and
Devonian of Central
Bohemia in Pictures
Barrandien. Geologie str"edocesk@ho siluru a devionu v obrazech
The publication has been issued on the occasion of the Inter-
national Geological Conference in Prague in summer 1958. It is
a book of pictures which in popular scientific form makes the
reader acquainted with the geological past of the Massif of
Bohemia at the time of the early Paleozoic. It sketches the de-
velopment of the investigation of this area from the period of
the famous French scientist Joachime Barrande up to the present
time and also presents in great detail Barrande's biography.
By many photographs the book acquaints lovers of nature with
the most interesting documents of the structure and beauty
of the vicinity of Prague. In the Czech literature this is the first
publication in the field of Geology which unites the results of
scientific investigation with a popular scientific interpretation,
presented mainly by evidence furnished in pictures. For the
Czech reader the paper offers not only instruction, but it also
represents an illustrated document, showing the gradually va-
nishing beauty of the region; it will be a valuable aid for
foreign 'scientists, who more and more frequently come to see
the Barrandian as a classical area for geological and paleonto-
logical research.

Scientific monograph from the sphere of geology which arose
on the basis of the scientific investigation carried out in the
Central Geological Survey. All the representatives of trilobites
(extinct class of Arthropoda) of the Cambrian, i. e. the earliest
Paleozoic' group, are described and illustrated in this paper.
Further the evolution of some species of trilobites from the
youngest larval stages up to the large adult forms is de-
scribed here from material which for the present has no
analogue in the world. In this work the author summarises our
knowledge of the above-mentioned subject, critically evaluates
all the papers published since 1872 and presents all his own
new findings. The text of the publications is supplemented by
collotype plates, on which all the trilobites of the Cambrian of
Bohemia are illustrated, and by text tables as well as by indexes
of authors and titles.

Chemistry of Organic This publication is intended to offer the reader in a well-
Fluorine Compounds selected form practically all important information necessary for
laboratory work in the field of organic. fluorine compounds. The
subject matter has been divided into ten chapters. In the intro-
duction, the author deals briefly with the history of fluorine
chemistry, with the nomenclature, and with safety measures in
laboratory work. The chapter on materials for apparatus con-
struction treats corrosion and resistance of various materials
against fluorine and hydrogen fluoride. In the chapter on fluor-
inating agents, the author describes the preparation of the most
important. Further he describes in considerable detail the
methods of introducing fluorine into organic compounds; in
the chapter on the preparation of organic fluorine derivatives
he deals only with the reactions actually used for the preparation
of the basic types of fluorinated compounds. Most thoroughly
the author treats the chapter on reactions of organic fluorine
compounds, systematically describing the reactions of fluorinated
derivatives. A brief chapter on organic reagents is devoted to
the application of some fluorine derivatives to chemical reactions.
Comparatively much space is given to the part on physical
and physiological properties of organic fluorine derivatives. Ana-
logy-with and differences from fluorine-free compounds are
represented as far as possible in the form of graphs. Then the
author. pays attention to the methods of determining fluorine
in both inorganic and organic compounds. Finally, in the part on
practical applications the author considers from the . techno-
logical viewpoint those fluorine compounds which represent
objects of chemical manufacture. In contradistinction to the
usual treatment of these subjects, the book contains a very
detailed chapter on physical properties and chemical reactions
of organic fluorine derivatives.

Rooting and This book deals with both customary and new methods of
Grafting of Fruit propagating fruit trees and, bushes by cuttings, grafts etc. It
Trees and Bushes is based on the authors' research work and' their long ex-
perience in this field. The 1954 edition, which is now out-of-
print, has been expanded in this new. edition. The first section
deals with hitherto unusual methods of striking, which may
prove to be of great importance in practice. In a further section
a survey is given of all established methods of striking. De-
tailed attention is given to fruit stocks and their propagation
and to their influence on the graft and vice versa. In the chapter
on grafting theoretical as well as practical questions are con-
sidered. An important new chapter deals with the budding of
walnuts in the glasshouse and the striking of woody shoots of
dwarf stocks. Methods of propagation using growth stimulants
include some, such as the preliminary preparation of cuttings
by etiolisation of the base used in the striking of peach and
apricot cuttings on a large scale, which have not been published
previously either in Czechoslovakia" or other countries.

Electric Resistance The book summarizes all principal knowledge and experience
Tensometers on measurements of the magnitude and course of deformations
of single parts and whole structures by means of electric wire
resistance tensometers. Tensometers are nowadays employed in
all fields of engineering, rbecause measuring by means of
resistance tensometers also permits the determination of dynamic
stress, and the small dimensions of the pick-up render these instru-'
ments suitable for application also in difficultly accessible places.
The author devotes the first pages of his book to a survey of the
methods employed for measurements of very small length va-
riations and thus also for stress determination. Then follows an
explanation of the principle of action and a description of the
properties of electric resistance tensometers. In further chapters,
the author deals with tensometer installations and rosette-type
pick-ups. The text of the work is supplemented by schematical
set-ups, diagrams, nomograms, and photographs of instruments;
the pertinent literature is cited up to the year 1956; looking-up
of individual items is facilitated by a subject index.

This publication presents original papers from the field of
ventilation and gas purfication, dealing throughout with en-
deavours to improve the atmosphere in both individual plants
(contributions by Ing. Dr L. Oppl and Ing. Dr J. Cihelka) and in
industrial regions (contributions by Ing. O. Storch, Ing. Dr
V. Praz"ak a Ing. O. Miczka). The actuality of these problems is
endorsed by tasks set by the Government for the improvement
of sanitary conditions in the regions of Ostrava and Usti, as
well as by difficulties arising also abroad in eliminating the
consequences of growing industrialization, such as the influences
of ;increased dust content and industrial pollution of the atmos-
phere, which affect human health, vegetation, etc.

Part I: From the
Begining to 1848
The collective work of the foremost Czech and Slovak historians
is based on the theses presented for public discussion in 1956.
The authors expect that the present Survey of Czechoslovak
History will lead to further wide discussion of Czechoslovak
history. The discussion should also deal with the question of the

character of a university textbook for history, the second part of
which will lead to 1918, the third part to 1938 and the fourth
from 1938 to the present. The discussion should also touch upon
the problem whether the present Survey, which is the result of
the joint work of a large group of historians, meets the needs
or whether it would be better to reduce the number of authors
and have a smaller group of historians write the history on the
basis of the collected material. This publication of the Survey
responds to the urgent call for a Czechoslovak history which
would be more than a secondary school-textbook and which
would be written in such a way as to be not only of interest
to specialists also to the wider public.

Aristoteles Kategorle. Prvni cast souboru logickych spisil Organon
Translated from the Greek original Aristoteles Ka-
tegoriai, edited by Im. Bekker (Aristoteles. graece,
Volumen prius. Academica Regia Borussica. Berolini
1831) by Dr. Antonin Kii2. The author of the in-
troductory study is Dr. Karel Berka. Notes and
comments by Dr. A. Krfif and Dr. K. Berka. Edited

The Categories. First The translation of the Categories gives the Czech public the
part of the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the first part of the
collected works on logic writings of the greatest ancient philosopher, Aristotle of
logic Organon Stageira (348-322 B. C.). Aristotle's writings on logic, known
under the collective title Organon, as well as his other philo-
sophical writings are one of the fundamental 'pillars of human
civilization. In it Aristotle outlined the firm gnoseolog-ical prin-
ciples of logic and created the first integral system of logic
which we call today the system of logic notions. In connection
with the state of science in his times and on the basis of his
philosophical predecessors Aristotle solved the universal pro-
blematics of notions which is closely linked with his theory of
categories. This .theory is the link between Aristotele's philo-
sophy as it is outlined in his Metaphysics and his logic system
built up particulary in the First Analytics. Aristotle's conclusions
are not only an ancient document In the history of logic, but
also prove the endeavour of the ancient thinker to make progress
in the sphere of recognizing the relationship betwen the per-
ceived and thought object and the perceiving subject. This small
work deserves our attention even today and its study is instructive
for everybody interested in philosophy.
Valid Judgment (res This work deals with the most important problems of penal
ludicata) and its procedure. On the background of the historical development of
Enforcement in the institution of valid judgment (res iudicata) the author shows
Penal Cases that this institution was adjusted in the legal order of every
social-economic formation in such a way as to contribute most
effectively to its alms. He then proceeds to analyse critically the

bourgeois theories of valid judgment and comes to the conclusion
that these theories helped to conceal the class bias of bourgeois
law. The author then explains the social-political significance of
legal judgment in the Czechoslovak penal code and gives a detailed
analysis of the valid form of this institution in present-day
Czechoslovak law. In conclusion of his treatise the author tries
to solve the problem of relationship betwen legal judgment and
the enforcement of judgment.

Kertchan Vases in This work aims at publishing all Kertchan vases existing in
Czechoslovak Czechoslovakia. At the same time it discusses in general the
Collections ancient ceramic production in the 4th cent. B.C. None of the
relics of this kind have hitherto been published in Czecho-
slovak collections. The work is divided into three sections. In
the first the author outlines the historic background against
which ceramic production developed in Athens of the fourth
century B.C., and the places to which these vases had been
chiefly exported. According to the richest finding place of this
type of vases they were called Kertchan vases. The second part
deals with Greek vases of the 4th century B.C. in general and
considers the relations of these vases to the ceramography of
the preceding period, the aesthetics of their decoration, their
ikonography and ikonology, their dates of origin and an evalua-
tion of their place in the history of art. The last part of the
book, the most extensive part, discusses Kertchan vases existing
in Czechoslovak collections; this is followed by their detailed
description, their date of origin and their place in the history
of art. Numerous photographs illustrate the second part or
accompany also the third part often in great detail.

Verses of
Affliction, Mockery,
and Defiance. From
topical popular and
semipopular Czech
poetry of the
seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries
Topical literary compositions, created on the occasion of
certain events or situations, undoubtedly have been alive among
the people from ancient times, but their development can be
consistently traced only from the Hussite period. The work is
an anthology of verse of that type embracing roughly the period
after the Battle at the White Mountain in 1620 until the be-
ginning of the national revival. The respective verses have in
common the various situations to which they react. Their
variety of forms bear witness to the creative force of the
authors. An important group of verses meant for oral recitation
consists of paraphrases of prayers among the song compositions
the most important-are Protestant songs, chapman's songs and
purely popular songs.
All these verses prove how vain was the endeavour of the
counter-reformation to destroy the Hussite tradition among the
Czech people. Its force and vitality which incited the oppressed
into many revolts, definitely resounds from the topical poetry
of this period and still excites our admiration.

Treatment of Syphilis
of the Nervous
System with
Penicillin
The author submits a report on examination and.treatment of
a series of 243 patients suffering from syphilis of the nervous
system as well as a certain number of mentally diseased indi-
viduals in whom the underlying illness was lues latens. Some
of these cases, treated with penicillin, have been followed up
for a period of over ten years. The author compares the results
of treatment with penicillin with those obtained in the times
before the advent of penicillin; ~

Vegetacne pomery okresu Sturovo
Vegetation Conditions In the first part of the above study Dr. B. Holubickovd gives
of the Sturovo a description of natural conditions of the Sturovo district,
District presents a survey of the types of wooded areas and plant fa-
milies as well as a survey of the single kinds of tree growing
on that territory, drawing from all this material economic con-
clusions which are of significance for practical work.
In the second part Dr. A. Kropdcovd concerns herself with
ecologic factors in the typology of meadows and pastures in
South Slovakia. She presents a survey of the working and eco-
logical methods as well as a survey of the ecological conditions
prevailing in that territory. She also enumerates the species
bidding fair for cultivation in those meadows and pastures, and
presents a table showing cultivation values of species in the
single ecologic stages.
Cultivation of Apricot The above study is a summary of what has been hitherto
Trees and Their learnt, in this country and abroad, about cultivation of apricot
Early Dying trees, special attention being 'devoted to the explanation of causes
of their early dying.
The first chapter gives a survey of the actual state of culti-
vation of apricot trees in different European countries (Czechb-
slovakia, USSR, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Austria, Bulgaria, France)
and in China. The second chapter deals with graft-carriers.
Same contains contributions the purpose of which is a pre-
liminary evaluation of local varieties of plums as potential graft-
carriers for apricot trees, as well as a discussion of the question
of their selection. In a further chapter the authors concern
themselves with reproduction of. apricot trees. In the fourth
chapter there are, besides a contribution to the theory of im-
provement with special reference to practical tasks, studies con-
cerning improvement as well as the more important questions
of agrotechnique. The fifth chapter treats of the harmful factors
and the last chapter of the results, hitherto gained, of complex
investigation of apricot growing localities.

Air-Entrained
Concrete
Taking a broad view of his subject, the author summarizes
in the above monograph what has been hitherto discovered
about air-entrained concrete and its properties, making use
partly of his own experience, partly of experience acquired in
several research institutes as well as on a great number of
sites in this country, and finally availing himself of studies,
published abroad.
He discusses the theory of formation of air bubbles when
mixing fresh concrete, as well as all factors having an influence
on their size and their total volume in the concrete. He quotes
the chemical composition of all known admixtures used in
air-entraining abroad and in this country, as well i as the direc-
tions for their application. Further, he discusses the influence of
air-entraining on all the properties of fresh as well as hardened
concrete, viz. consistency, coherence, workability, bleeding,
strength, bond, modulus of elasticity, capillarity and resistance
against aggresive influences. He pays careful attention to the
various dosing devices for air-entraining, used on sites. This
monograph is a contribution not only to the problem of im-
proving the quality of the most used and most important build-
ing material - concrete - of the building industry of to-day,
but also to the problem of making methods of building more
economical, of increasing the durability and thus also the safety
of concrete constructions.
