Administrative Offices for the Manufacture of Abrasives: The Ministry for Machine Building, Main Administration for Abrasives and Grinding in MOSCOW, a branch of the Main Administration in LENINGRAD. a) "VNIIASH", Scientific Institute for Abrasives in LENINGRAD. Attached to this Institute are: A Research Plant for Abrasives Production connected with a "LOAS " Abrasives Plant in LENINGRAD, "GIROSTANOK", a Planning Service for Abrasive Manufacture (for all of the USSR) in LENINGRAD, and A Planning Office for Furnace Construction in LENINGRAD. b) The "ILYICH" Grinding Wheel Plant in LENINGRAD, the largest plant in the USSR, with the greatest capacity; an old plant with old equipment, partly mechanized. c) An old Grinding Wheel Plant near LENINGRAD, which is to be combined with a modern plant, d) An old-type Abrasives Plant in MOSCOW. e) A modern plant in ZAPOROZHE, equipped with the latest installations and machinery; one half of the plant is in operation; the other half is still under construction. f) A Grinding Wheel Plant in TASHKENT. g) An Abrasives Plant in CHELYABINSK. No figures on Total Production were announced. 4. Suppliers of Raw Material for Bauxite; Hungary and Greece. Manufacture of Grading Sifters. Domestic supplier: a plant in LENINGRAD. No information about other suppliers. 6. Electric Power Plants. In LENINGRAD and MOSCOW, power is supplied by the local networks. In ZAPOROZHE, power is supplied from outside, possibly from DNEPROPETROVSK. P ow art No data on supply bottlenecks. A 7. Means of Transportation. Rail transportation for supplies of basic materials and for shipment of finised products. Water transportation via Black Sea ports, possibly used for bauxite from Greece. 8. Storage of Raw Materials. In ZAPORCZHE, 240,000 tons of bauxite is stored at present, reportedly sufficient reserves for the plant's require- ments for 3 years. Old plants are largely equipped with German machinery. Modern plants are mainly equipped with machinery of Soviet manufacture and, reportedly, a small percentage of US machinery. Following auxiliary materials are used: soft metals, borax, shellac, dextrin, waterglass, coal and petroleum coke, natural and synthetic resins, rubber, and bigmanite Liz. 11. Export. According to plant employees, the USSR does not export any abrasives, not being able to cover its own requirements . II. Notes on the Trip. 1. Our guides on the trip were members of the Main Administration for Abrasives and Grinding Manufacture in LENINGRAD and officials of certain plants. 2. The delegation was under the continual observation of two interpreters, especially in ZAPOROZHE, less so in LENINGRAD. Hotel accopmodations were good in LENINGRAD. In MOSCOW and in LENINGRAD, six persons occasionally had to share the same room. 3. .. In.LENINGRAD..:.or' MOSCOWli.a foreigner'.is not:'.consp.cuous unless his clothing or conduct is unusual. A foreigner always makes himself conspicuous by carrying a camera. The inhabitants are always ready to give street directions, etc. In MOSCOW and in LI?TINGRAD, one can go everywhere by taxi.
