Benes Square, opposite the Regional Adminis- tration of the Ministry of the Interior and the STB. Trida Marsala Stalina passes through the square and leads to the station. The actual HQ for the OLOMOUC and GOTTWALDOV areas is in a three-storeyed building, and is subordinate to the Ministry of National Defence. There are three HQs for tactical units in TMaravia, at OL0-11OUC, BRNO and OSTRAVA, and GOTTWALDOV and part of the JIHLAVA region are distributed under them. All branches of the services, including the air- force L, are 3ebordinate to them, and these +Military Area HQs are not identical with or connected with the Regional Military Administration. The military training area at LIBAVA is also subordinate to the CLOTIOUC HQ. Th HQ building contains a telephone exchange, through which pass all calls from unit to unit. The C.O. of the HQ is a "two-star" general. 2) Garrison HQ and Supply Corps offices, in fairly old three- storeyed buildings near (1), on the North-east corner of the square, with ulice Husova on the West side, ulice Slamova on the East and the Orthodox Church at the North end; the supply service in this complex is probably for the g rrison only. At full strength, the OLOMOUC military area reaches the num- ber of 60,000, including officers, NCOs and men. 3) Anti-aircraft and Signals units, in the old Terezianska pevnustka (formerly cavalry barracks) on Nova ulice on the West side of OLOMOUC hospital. The installation has been largely rebuilt, with quarters and a new kitchen converted from the old stables (a). The HQ (b) is housed in a one-storeyed 50X1-HUM building by the original fortress. No AA guns have been seen at this Barracks. 4) AA unit and officers' training school for AA Arty, in a fairly old Barracks complex in the centre of the town opposite the Tank Barracks. The East side is bounded by the river Morava, the South by ulice Komenskeho, the North-east by ulice Dobrovskeho, and the remaining side by trida Vaclava III. The unit has 30 85 mm AA guns, and a considerable number of vehicles, mostly V 3 S, both visible from the street, as they are ranged in the middle of the yard. The AA Arty officers' trainin school has about 200 trainees; the CO is a Colonel and there is a Soviet advisor with the rank of Hajor. The trainees took an active part in the fighting in Hungary in October and November, 1956. 5) Tank unit, in fai:?ly )ld Barracks opposite (1+) on Klasterohradistaska ulice, with namesti Biskupa Gorazda and ulice Pasterrova on the South side; to the North there is a stadium and fields. The unit has 30 S - 2 tanks, I 50X1-HUM and other vehicles. The CO io a Colonel. The unit has engaged in the fighting in Hungary in October and November 1956. To the-North, on the street, there is an inn formerly belonging to ABMA n.p., frequented by both army personnel and civilians. 6) Tank unit, armed with SD 105 self-propelled guns, 6 of which have been observed; the exact number is not known. The unit is billeted in fairly old Barracks in the South-east part of OLOMOUC - NOVY SVEP, opposite the main supply stores on Helicka ulice, and the South side is 'bounded by ulice Josefa Nalevky and the OL07-IOUC - BRNO railway line. South of the installation is Trida mire, con- tinuing as the PRAGUE - LITOVEL road, and to the East ulice Na sibeniku. In December 1956, the air force garrison was transferred to PREROV - BOCEOR airfield, and the Barracks largely evacuated, and since that time, the air craft repair workshops have not been used. A unit of 150 to 200 men remained to prepare the airfield for handing over to the OLO:?COUC SVAZAR11. The purpose for which the Barracks in the former fortress are in future to be used is not known. 8) Engineers' unit, in the Eastern part of OLO::IOUC, South of trida ;Marsala Stalina, in an installation with the River %.Iorava on the West side, ulice Zeyerova and Krizikova to the North-4.ast, and the stream called Bystrioa to the North- west. The unit numbers about 300, and the CO is a Colonel. There is practice in building folding and ponteor bridges on the Morava, etc, and the unit has a large amount of equip- ment; most of the vcL^,cleS are V 3 S. 9) Garrison HQ and Barracks for a unit of the Interior Guard, extending along the West side of ulioe Boziho tela as for as namesti Republiky. 10) Interior Guard unit, in a former monastery, used as a supply office, and for other purposes since the war; it is a large square three-storeyed building on Stefanikova ulice near the Natural History Museum, with r!Iuse jni ulice on the West side, ulice Pekarni on the East, and ulice Kozeluzska on the North side. 11) D um (Array House), East of (10), and on the East side of ulic.: Pekarni, with uliee : loochova on the Fast side. 12) idil tary Hos iP tal, installed in a former monastery after 1945, in the Northern part of the town on Susilovo nantesti. Storage installatiorrss 13) Hiilitarv supply stcMC T old military installation 98M hi ALd Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/09/20: CIA-RDP80T00246AO41200200001-1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/09/20: CIA-RDP80T00246AO41200200001-1 SECRET 50X1-HUM in OLOMOUC - POVEL, the South-west of the town, on the South side of Polska ulice, with ulice Jihoslovanska on the East side; the installation consists of a group of wooden huts, most of them built before the war; a railway track leads to it and is constantly in use to transport all kinds of material; fuel is probably stored here, as there is always a large number of metal barrels in the storage area. Trucks entering the area are covered, so it is not possible to ascertain what kind of material they conta;.n. The depot is guarded by Works 111litia, with dogs. 14) 0,;,1 stores, in a former group of mill buildings on the West site of the OLOMOUC Fats Industry, South of the East end of Polska ulice; the depot is enclosed on all sides by the river '114.orava, and consists of two five-storeyed buildings and a number of masonry and wooden ground-floor buildings,. a railway track leads into it. Two wooden observation towers have been built in the area, which is guarded by both military personnel and Works railitia; the depot supplies foodstr'ffs for the LIBAVA military training area. 15) Supply depot and military eguiprient, 0L0-?IOUC - NOVY SVET, opposite (6) and extending from Holicka ulice about 650 in. alongside the OLO;,.PtOUO - BRNO railway line; it consists of a large number of ground-floor wooden buildings containing stores and workshops for OL0:tOUC Garrison HQ, including tailors', cobblers' harness-makers', carpenters' and motor repair workshops; wood, iron and leather etc. and spare parts are stored at the depot., and vehicles involved in crashes are brought here. SECRET Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/09/20: CIA-RDP80T00246AO41200200001-1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/09/20: CIA-RDP80T00246AO41200200001-1 SECRET - 5 - Atonic shelters etc. SEGR FT 16) New shelter, finished in 1956, on nova ulice, at the South-wrest corner of the hospital, ferro-concrete, with an earth rampart; it is probably for the use of the hospital. 17) Atomic shelters constructed from the original shelters in IM,iiohalske sady East of the Capucin monastery; the original shelters were built in 1942-45; the work of modification and reinforcement went on from 1950 to 1956. 18) Ferro-concrete bunker;, built in 1956 on the corner at the Havlickova-Pavelcakova/tlynska-Fierlirr,rova crossroads; the bunker is about 4 x 3 in. and 2 in. high, the South-east side built into the old citadel; it has loophol:s and is probably intended to defend the approach to Masarykovo namesti from Havlickova-Pavelcakova trida. The i,ilynsky potok (stream) has been oanalised here as far as the point where it enters the Bystr:.cka. 19) F orrier Barracks, now used for civilian storage purposes, on he North side of the Dominican church and girls' s^.hool. 20) Regional administration of the 'Ministry of the Interior - Regional StB HQ, in the forrier police station, and Gestapo building, on the North side of noinesti Dr. E. Benes, a three- storeyed L-shaped building. 21) District Security Department, on the West side of the Faculty of Medicine, on Gottwaldova trida, a fairly old square three-storeyed building.
