Sketch Lu Attached at Appendix "k is an annotated sketch map of the Soviet naval anchorage on the Amur River north of K1A3AR9VSK. The site is the Headquarters of the Amur Flotilla, Soviet Far East Fleet. 2. Naval Anchorage (a) Characteristics. Excellent anchorage facilities are afforded by the stretch of calm water between ZAYACH Island (see sketch) and the river bank. No dredgers were seen at work during the period of observation. It was noted during swi;ning expeditions to the southern end of the anchorage that the bank and causeway shelved rapidly into deep water. (b) Installations. The Flotilla H."?. buildings, naval barracks and the two shipyards (see Appendix with ancillary buildings are the only features of the port. In 194.8 three shifts per day were worked at the KIROV yard. No further details are known. 3. Amur Flotilla Units. (a) Flagship. A vessel of about 500 tons, painted grey, anchored alongside a jetty near the KIROV yard throughout the period of observation. It was seen only bows-on. A sketch at Appendix "B" gives an impression of the silhouette of this vessel. This ship was the largest seen in the port and is thought for this reason to be the flagship of the flotilla. (b) Gunboats. Gunboats seen on the river were of two types: (i) Length approximate30 ,.ietres; two masts, the foremast rising from top o~' two-deck bridge structure. Single funnel abaft bridge. Gun on foredeck fitted with shield. No details as to calibre. See sketch at Appendix "C". (ii) A smaller type about 13 metres in length. Two-deck bridge s;;ructure with funnel abaft bridge. Single mast rising out of bridge. I:iachine gun (no gun shield) on foredeck. See sketch at Appendix "0''. 4. Floating Dock A floating dock of unknown capacity lay opposite the KIROV yard. 5. USSTJRI Flotilla This visit was said to be based on KRAMAYA 3ECHKA, south of Kr1ABAROVSK. No further details known.
