Naval Anchorage and Shipyards at KHABAROVSK
(September 1948)
1. Sketch Lu
Attached at Appendix "k is an annotated sketch map of
the Soviet naval anchorage on the Amur River north of K1A3AR9VSK.
The site is the Headquarters of the Amur Flotilla, Soviet Far
East Fleet.
2.
Naval Anchorage
(a) Characteristics. Excellent anchorage facilities
are afforded by the stretch of calm water between ZAYACH Island
(see sketch) and the river bank. No dredgers were seen at work
during the period of observation. It was noted during swi;ning
expeditions to the southern end of the anchorage that the bank and
causeway shelved rapidly into deep water.
(b) Installations. The Flotilla H."?. buildings, naval
barracks and the two shipyards (see Appendix with ancillary
buildings are the only features of the port. In 194.8 three
shifts per day were worked at the KIROV yard. No further details
are known.
3. Amur Flotilla Units.
(a) Flagship. A vessel of about 500 tons, painted
grey, anchored alongside a jetty near the KIROV yard throughout the
period of observation. It was seen only bows-on. Mounted

on the foredeck was a gun of approximately 105 mm calibre fi tied
with a shield. A sketch at Appendix "B" gives an impression
of the silhouette of this vessel. This ship was the largest
seen in the port and is thought for this reason to be the
flagship of the flotilla.
(b) Gunboats. Gunboats seen on the river were of two
types:
(i) Length approximate30 ,.ietres; two masts,
the foremast rising from top o~' two-deck bridge structure.
Single funnel abaft bridge. Gun on foredeck fitted with
shield. No details as to calibre. See sketch at Appendix "C".
(ii) A smaller type about 13 metres in length.
Two-deck bridge s;;ructure with funnel abaft bridge. Single
mast rising out of bridge. I:iachine gun (no gun shield) on
foredeck. See sketch at Appendix "0''.
4. Floating Dock
A floating dock of unknown capacity lay opposite
the KIROV yard.
5. USSTJRI Flotilla
