Possible New Missile Sites near Studena Dam 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM Soon after passing Over-the Studena Dam along the main international highway froM-Sofie to Greece throligh-STANKI DIMITROV,- an-area'about .3004400 m east of the -highway, on 50X1-HUM top of a local.platean about-80 lahighee than the -road 50X1-HUM workmen were buildingA rocket base. during July and August 1962 the'. military had been dynamiting and heavy track traffic had been hauling mostly cement to the -position. In additions, 50X1-HUM towers (kuli, which in Bulgarian could also Signify' a crane boomer a rocket launcher ramp) in the air one day and gone the next, and then -a week or so later the tower wouldagain be raised, military trucks with long, flat trailer beds in the area. 50X1-HUM the area was at a point on the road abreast of where the'cablestone road surface over the Studena Dam area ended, and the asphalt (sic) pavement commenced, traveling in a southerly direction, 50X1-HUM many of the local inhabitants were concerned because the nnew rocket base made their villages likely targets in event of warn. on the site were three wooden barracks, one-story highs50X1-HUM and the area fazing the highway wasfenced-in with barbed wire.- the 50X1-HUM workmen wore army uniforms the site was clearly visible to anyone traveling along this main international highway. - The site had an extensive and clear field of viewrto the west and southwest. It was in full-operation,- administered and guardedby:Military:pereonnel, and persons from neighboring vil- lages were reckaited to work in the plant? The highway passed through the Pass of the Republic from RUSE and TURNOVO via KILIFAREVO, VUGLEVTSI, VOINEZHA, VONESHTA VODA (2VENKOVTSI), NIKOLAEVO, GURKOVO, NOVA ZAGORA And SVILENGRAD. The road was called.the-main military road (Glaven Voenneh Put) 50X1-HUM It was a first-class, hard surface, all-weather 50X1-HUM road, built by the military labor troops daring the period 1955-1958 or 1959.
