There is a marked deficit in the males born 1895-1905 (World War I recruits). (b) Pored hag an unexpetted excesa in the 15-19 year old male group born 1941-1945. There are more middle age Men in Pored 20-494 If there is an immigration there - more males than feMales arrive: If there is an "out" migration, the female and the elder female have gone with the men. The 50 to 65 plus age group fails to shot the ek- petted dip due to increased probability of dying in the Male. (c) Pula has similar trends at Pored except in the older age group which approaches the Croatian average, 2. Whereas Pula has more middle aged ineh than expected, Varazdin has leas. Especially low is the deficit it the 25-29 age group but also in the 30-34 age group. 3. Th deficit of the young adult male and the providiiig male is even more evident in the area of Cistoved, There was considerable difference in Schooling. Istria and es- pecially Pazin and Porec had 12-14% of the males and 14-17% of females with nor or less than three grades of elementary school. National boycott of Italian schools must have played some role. Medjimorje has less higher schooling, but also less incomplete elementary schooling. Vocational schooling and middle school attendance is high for the Istrian male, especially in Pula. Istria sends more people to the universities than Medjimorje. The illiteracy of both male and female born 1925 and before it considerable for a central European area. This points to residual of illiterate population Which stands out more in proportion in areas of emigration. Uoth Istria aftd Medjimorje represent such reservoirs. Pemale illiteracy exceeds the male ih the elder age group, Parallel with illiteracy goes superstition. Could it be that an aatOCiation between deboleta and areas with higer illiteracy exist? Agriculture: Yugoslavia was once considered an agriCultural country. Today it is rapidly industrializing. Istria especially has lott a good part of her agriculture population to industry, commerce, fishing and of the administration. anm/main agricultural producbsit wine. The deficit of active winegrowers is increasing, Ih Motavun, for instance, the outstanding cause of concern of the local winegrbwera is lack of people attending the vineyard. EmigratiOn made the bithation worse. Pamilies from Other winegtowing areas are settling around Motavum now, Nearly 20% of the population are from Medjimotje who have permanently settled in Istria. Industry and especially mining hat colonies of workers frOm i3onnia, Dalmancija, Modjimorje and Southern Serbia and Macedonia but only for temporary stay. The agricultural immigrant in Istria is a permanent settler and comes with his dependents. The emigration of other groups choosing Italian 'nationality is not yet balanced. The national and historical differences appear striking but more out- standing is the geographic and climatic differences of these areas. After all, one area is panonian and one Adriatic; these are different like the people from Maryland's Eastern Shore and people from mid-western flatlands. To Use one area for a control group for any health problem is hazardous. Selection of small communities present even more choice of divergent variables. Alternate suggestion: By looking for association of variables on people who come with a complaint called "D", the most obvious control group would be the people In the same environment who don't come with complaint "D" Hereby an alternate suggestion as to locality is submitted which also takes into consideration the type of locality and does not limit itself to rural conditions only. Suggested Points of Investigation Srez Pula Srez Rijeka Srez Zador Rural township, remote from coast Pazin,Motavum Moicenica (town) Zemunski Coastal city Porec-Vrsar Losinj Biograd Island or semi- oiscolated waterfront Medulic Omisalj,Bosha Ugljan &one of these areas are fully isolated but all have similar climate, geography, nutrition, heritage and expressions for weakness and disability.
