This rk contains information about ;t.i botanical
gardens of the soviet Union. Before 191? there were only
26 ta.n.ical gardens and dendrarl.u.z+rns in Russia with its
various natural conditions, most of them being located
in the European part. F t of all it is necessary to ment-
ion such old gardens as the Botanical, OF rd en of the Mos-
cow University /founded in 1706/, LeninFrad Botanical Der-
den of the USSR Academy of Sciences /1713/, dendroperk

near to Yalta /1812/ and some others. Only one botanical
garden was on the whole Asiatic part /in Tomsk/. Before
the revolution botanical gardens mainly were state pro-
perty, subordinated to the universities and other hi@AW
educational establishments. Several.gartiens and parks

this everything restricted useful work :f the botanical

sc lent 1f1c...rea9aroh inntitutions and
higher educational establishments, new botanical gardens
were organized in the country. Old botanical gardens have
gained now perspectives for their development and research
work. The number of the botanical gardens was increased,
better geographical localities were chosen for their orga-
nization. At present they situated in alnv'st all climatic
zones of the country which is rich in vegetable resources.

Theurt of the botanical gardens is concentrated in
the aropean part of the USSR in forest, forest-steppe and
steppe zones.
In the North, behind the Polar circle, the Polar-Alpiea
Botanical Garden /near to Kirovak, on the Kola Peninsular/
successfully conducts the work. A number of the botanical
gardens and dendrariums is located in the South of the So-
viet Union, under subtropical conditions; /Tbilisi, Batumi,
8ukhuni, Sochi, Yerevan, Baku/. The botanical gardens of
Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tadjikistan, K:wrhizia are sitoat
ad in the Middle Asia. Extremely interesting work is eon-
duoted in the botanical garden in Khorog located high iat
the Pamirs, at height of 2320 in. above sea level.
There are several botanical gardens in the Par last of
the Pacific Coast, in Siberia with its cold oontinental
climate, in the Urals.

Several botanical gardens besides the work on intro-
duction and acclimatization of plants, pay great attention
to the problems of species formation and origination of new
forms and sorts of various plants. For example, theoretical
works on the remote hybridization of plants are conducted
at the Main Botanical Garden of the USSR Academy of Scien-
cees. This works were widely applied to the cersals and as
a result of this work new high-yielding and economically
important sorts of wheat were obtained. They sera originat-
ed from crossing Triticum vulgare and Agropyron glaueum.
Same other plants in this garden were also subjected to the
remote hybridization. Similar works are carried out also at
tAe Botanical Garden of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences in
TI-ashkent, at the Kishinev Botanical Garden of the Moldavian
Academy of ,;oiences.
Botanical gardens of the universities and other higher

Large botanical gardens also train specialists - bota-
nists of higher qualification. Specialists guided by the
authoritative prole sore, prepare their candidate and doeter
theses. Themes linked with the purposes of the botanical
ga.rd-ns are suggested for these theses. The rich floral mate
rial from the collections of the gardens or from the nature
is used.
Botanical gardens take an active part in greening,
recommend trees, shrubs, grasses and deoorative plants,
!lardy, in city parks. In the course of introduction and ao-
c1iruiti7,ation, in the course of the initial trial of the
gres.t number of various sorts and species, the botanical
gardens select tue best and most interesting sorts and va-
rieties and transfer them to the city nurseries for propa-
gation and planting in city gardens and parks.
Traditional exchange of seeds and plants !.a kept in
every way possible and developed by the botanical gardens
of the Sot7'_et Union. This exchange with the botanical in-
stitutions both in the country and abroad is carried out
on large scale. From 91 Soviet botanical gardenia 74 publish
yearly lists of seeds which they offer for the exchange.
The aced lists of the largest botanical gardens include
not only those plants which are grown in their oolleetiona
but also the seed gathered during the expeditions to the
places of the natural habitat.
