A. Creation of the Institute
The Institute of Geography was established on the basis
of the Governmental decree of October 13, 1953. Its aim is to
carry out research in the field of geography. The Institute
belongs to III Department of the Polish Academy of Sciences
which is concerned with Mathematic-Physical, Chemical and Geo-
logo-Geographical Sciences. The Institute is the Academy's in-
dependent scientific centre.
3. Aims
The Institutes activities comprise research in geogra-
phical sciences. The Institute faces the following tasks:
1, carrying out geographical research according to prelatez-
mined plans
2. linking of the results of studies with practice
3. co-operation and exchange of experience with national
and foreign institutions in the field of research and
taking advantage of the results of investigations
?. preparing and publishing of scientific publications
5, training of the scientific staff
f* organizing of scientific conferences and meetings
7. general supervision - in accordance with the directions
of proper authorities - upon the work of the centres not
belonging to the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The Institute does not conduct didactic occupations itself.

At the head of the Institute are: The Director, Direotor7
and Scientific Council.
The Director - Ord.Prof. Dr. StanisZaw LESZCZYCKI; the Deputy
Director - Extraord.Prof. Dr. Jerzy KOSTROWICKI; the Scientific
Secretary - Dr. Antoni KUKLINSKI.
The Director conducts scientific works as a whole, hee.,ma-
nages personal matters of the scientific and administrative
staff of the Institute, elaborates research programmes and
reports on the Institutes activities, and executes the reso-

lutions.of'the Presidium of the Academy and of the III Depart-
ment.
The Directory collaborates with the Director in managing
the works of the Institute and discusses - when suggested by
the Director .. the matters being of mater importance to the
Instituted The Directory is composed of:. the, direotor, heads
of the departments, sections and subsections of'' the Institute
and other members of the staff invited by the director /in
1959 - 18 persons altogether/:,

The Scientific Coun it discusses and approves the plans
of researches of the Institute, supervises editorial activities
and the course of training of the sole tiffs staff. The Council
graduates, approves proposals of giving scientific degrees to
independent and assistant scientific workers, it also deals
with other matters suggested by the Aoademy's authorities and
by the director of the Institute.
D, Structure of the Institute and its staff
The Institute employs 133 workers altogether. This number
compri$es:'17 independent scientific workers, 46 assistant
scientific workers; the rest are scientific-teahnioal workers,
editorial staff, administrative-financial personnel and service
workers,
