The office of the Chief of Division IX (Foeosztely) of the AVH (fllamv4de1mi Hatoseg - State Security Authority), which is formally referred to as the Elamvedelmi Hatoseg Belsoe Kerhatalmi Dander Parancsnoksega, and popularly known as the BKA (Belsoe Kerhatalmi Alakulat - Internal Guard Formation), is filled by Lt. Col. (fnu) KRISTOF. KRISTOF 9 re- placed Col. (fnu) KAJLI when the latter was purged and arrested in January 1953 50X1-HUM in connection with Gabor PETER. Division-IX iA responsible for the organization of armed, uniformed guards, distinguished by blue shoulder tabs and piping, who are assigned to protect all AVH establishments (Headquarters buildings, barracks, arsenals, AVH prisons and internment camps, among others), and all other GovernMent buildings affecting the national security (such as Radio Budapest and war plants); BKA troops also form an alert corps for quelling riots, strikessand demonstrations which the civil police are unable to handle, and for participating in nation-wide "razzias". (2) 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM 2. In addition to the Division Chief, Division IX is provided with a Deputy Chief (name unknown) and with a Soviet Advisor and AVH Interpreter (names unknown). It is assumed that there is also a Secretariat, although the existence of this office can only be hypothesized by source.The organization of Division IX, 50X1-HUM whose personnel are commonly referred to a;;-61"Terror Legenyek" (the Terror 'Fellows), is presumably a military structure, as like Division IV (Border Guards) it is a military or para-military organ. In addition to the normal units to 50X1-HUM be found in any military organization, there are also probably a Supply Section (Gazdasagi), a Political Section, a Personnel Section (directed by Division but under the command of the Chief of Division IX; kadering would be performed by the Division IX Personnel Section, merely guided by Division V/1), and a Pro- vincial Liaison (Instruktor) Section. V SECRET/CONTROL - U. S. -2- OFFICIALS ONLY 50X1 -HUM 3. The Headquarters of Division IX is believed located in the Bajci Zsilinszky Barracks in Budapest VIII, at Hungaria Koerut and Kerepesi utca. The Head- quarters Detachment of troops which serves the Pest Province is also located in this building. Other detachments of BKA troops are also assigned to all other provincial capitals. The troops receive standard military training and live in barracks. The officers and NCO's of Division IX are career AVH men, but the enlisted men are army recruits assigned to the AVH.
