Coal mined from Pit 269 is burned for a period of about 12-18 months. The ashes are then sorted. The higher grade of ash is sent direct to the ore concentration plant at Gittersee for processing; the lower grade goes first to the old factory" at Freital for preliminary processing and from there to the new factory" at Gittersee for final treatment. 5. Both these pits are in the Erzgebirge, and both have been continuously and very profitable exploited since the early days of Wismut. Supplies of ore are new rapidly approaching the point of exhauetien, however, and both pits have now been placed under the control of one Schaehtleiter. 8, Pit 196 is situated at Niederpebel near Schmiedeberg in the Erzgebirge, and at present is employing 200 Germans, 9. Pit 209 is situated at Baerenhecke, also in the Erzgebirge, and at present has a staff of about 220 Germans. At its peak, before 1950, this pit was believed to be producing as much as 60 pit ears (capacity 0.6 tons) of Grade I and Grade II ore per shift; three shifts per day were worked. In 1952,however,it is reported that the is.,ok.xl target (which was usually exceeded) was as low asg Grade I Grade II Grade III 350 containers (Kisten) 450 containers 500-600 containers 19.
