Y. Declassified and Approved For Release 2012/06/22 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R003400020051-1 Declassified and Approved For Release 2012/06/22 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R003400020051-1 ANNOUNCEMENT OF FOREIGN STUDY AND RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS 1952 Asia and the Near and Middle East The Ford Foundation is offering at this time fellowships to American men and women who wish to initiate or continue training or research pertaining to Asia, the Near and Middle East. The funds appropriated for this program are adequate to provide sub- stantial assistance to as many as 100 qualified applicants. This program is intended to stim- ulate increased knowledge of these critical areas and to help meet the urgent need for large numbers of men and women well quali- fied in business, education, government, agri- culture, labor relations and the professions throughout Asia and the Near and Middle East. The program has a threefold purpose. It is intended to aid young college graduates to deepen their general understanding of Asia and the Near and Middle East, to afford ad- vanced training for specialists, and to enable men and women of promise, already launched upon their careers, to study, live and work in these areas. The Foundation has established these fellow- ships in keeping with its concern for reducing present international tensions and furthering world peace. The program is based upon a conviction that the development of mutual understanding and respect among the peoples of the world is essential to these ends. A necessary step toward such understanding and respect is to increase the number of competent Americans who have achieved sympathetic insight into the cultures, histories, institu- tions, aspirations, and current problems of peoples and governments of vital regions of the world. The fellowship program will be administered by the Foundation's Board on Overseas Training and Research. 'THE BOARD ON OVERSEAS The Board on Overseas Training and Re- search has been established to assist The Ford Foundation in formulating programs and carrying out activities pertaining to the fur- therance of world peace. Specifically, the Board will study and assess both private and governmental programs of international training and research and will advise the Foundation upon ways in which these pro- grains may be strengthened to enable the nation to meet more effectively its interna- tional responsibilities. The Board will ad- minister the Foundation's own programs in support of overseas training and research. The Board will investigate the requirements for informed and skilled Americans in the TRAINING AND RESEARCH various fields of service abroad, and in so doing will consult with private and govern- mental groups in this country and will seek the counsel of informed nationals of other countries. It will evaluate the adequacy of educational facilities within the United States and elsewhere to provide training of a kind and quality required by the present complexi- ties of world affairs. It will appraise the principal needs for basic research concerning major world areas and general problems of world affairs, and will assess existing or po- tential facilities for the conduct of such research. The Board will direct its attention initially to Asia and the Near and Middle East.
