Army Fort Belvoir, Virginia Dear Colonel Hennings General Smith has asked me to acknowledge your letter of 15 July and to thank you for your kindness and interest. He was complimented that you included his book, "MY THP-49 Y ARS IN MOSCOW," in your reading list. Because of the great demands placed upon him as Direc- tor of Central Intelligence, the General was only able to go over the list rather hurried3,v and as a result, is unable to suggest any additions or deletions. He regrets very much that he is unable to devote sufficient time to make a proper study of the list. S. ARMY FORT BELVOIR, VIRGINIA 15 July 1952 Lieutenant General Walter B. Smith Central Intelligence Agency Washington 25., Do C* Dear General Smith: The challenging role now being played by the United States on the international stage is having a profound and complex effect upon the lives of all Americans. For those in the military services the effects are, perhaps, more pronounced than for others. The Engineer School feels that it is now, more than ever, necessary that the American citizen and soldier gain the broadest possible background to assist them in analyzing the events that shape their destinies. To this end, we have published a listing of works that we feel should be read by officers of the Corps of Engineers. We are enclosing a copy of this list. Your work, "My Three Years in Moscow", is included on page 10. We are very anxious to improve the list for future publication. For this reason, we invite your comment - both as to completeness of the list and as to additional remarks you feel should be made about your own work. We have also enclosed a time-saving comment sheet, which may be of assistance to you. The Engineer School will be most grateful for your help on its future reading list. Very truly yours, Colonel, Infantry HENNINGT LINDEN 1 Incl: The Engineer School Chief, Dept of Military Art Reading List Approved For Release 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R003100070014-0 ,Approved~r Release 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80R 1 R003100070014-0 QOWtENTS GN THE ENGINEER SCHOOL ,READING LIST I would add the following books: Title and Author Reason I would delete the following, books: Approved For Release 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R003100070014-0 Approved For Rel 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80RO1731 R0000070014-0 If my personal library were destroyed and I could obta only, a dictionary, an encyclopedia, a Bible, and '10 other books, on the subjects: History, Economics, Politics and Military Affairs, the 10 books I would select are: Approved For Release 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R003100070014-0 THE ENGINEER SCHOOL READING LIST Prepared by THE DEPARTMENT ' OF MILITARY ART JUNE 1952 (Second Revision) THE ENGINEER SCHOOL U. S. ARMY FORT BELVOIR, VIRGINIA Approved For Release 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R003100070014-0 Appr ied For Release 2003/06/26: CIA-RD10R01731 R003100070014-0 INTRODUCTION In this "cold war" period, when maintenance of the national military and political strength is the business of everyone, more than ever it is necessary for all officers in the Army of the United States to have a good knowledge of world affairs. The effects of economics, politics, geography, sociology, arts and sciences on the minds of people, and the resulting policies of governments become of vital importance. The battle for the minds of men is of equal importance to you as an Army Officer as it is for every citizen. The objective of this list is to help each officer to under- stand his own profession of arms (and its background) more thoroughly and to comprehend generally what makes the world as it is today and what influences its peoples to act as they do. You as an Army Officer will be called on to do many jobs over and beyond combat duties. The young officer should not in any way feel limited by this list. If he feels that his knowledge in any field is lacking he should consult that particular section in the bibliography for some suggested works to be read. A rough attempt has been made to place less technical works in earlier periods of service, and those books which can be read only after some knowledge of the field has been attained in following periods of service. This list is divided into two main sections: SECTION I - SUGGESTED READING Part 1 - First five years of commissioned service. Junior Officer (Troop school to company officer's course) Part 2 - The period of company grade. About 5-10 years service. (Company officer's course to advanced course) Part 3 - The period of grade of major. About 10-15 years service. (Advanced course to Command and General Staff School) Part 4 - The period of grade of Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel. About 15-20 years service. (Command and General Staff School to Army War College) Part 5 - Optional books, which are considered significant, but of more limited value than those listed in previous parts. Part 6 - Periodicals. Approved For Release 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R003100070014-0 Approved For elease 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80RO1730003100070014-0 SECTION II - BACKGROUND READING Part 1 - Works suggested as good background material by the United States Military Academy which do not appear in other sections where they are designated as (MA). Part 2 - Works listed as 100 significant books by civilian colleges, selected by the Committee on College Reading and published in A GUIDE TO GOOD READING (sponsored by The National Council of Teachers of English), 1948. A fair sampling of these books should have been ex- amined before entering Service; however, these works are included for those officers whose academic study has not included the liberal arts at undergraduate college level. Works contained in Section I are broken down into Fields of Study and listed alphabetically by author within each part with-a brief description of their contents. Also, works which have been -recommended by other service schools are indicated in parentheses to the right of the title as follows: Recommended List for National War College Students, (NWC) 1951-52 Recommended Background Reading List for Air War College, (AWC) 1950-51 Collateral Reading, Armed Forces Staff College, 1951-52 (AFSC) Recommended Background Reading List for U.S, Military Academy, D/MA&E 1948 A Guide for Professional Reading by Air Force Officers, 1950-51 (AFP 212-1-1) (MA) (AF) Required Reading for USAF Extension Courses, 1949 edition (AF) Officers Call, 1950-52 (OC) Recommended by the Army War College in War Department (WD) Bulletin 44, dated 24 August 1928, and included to show standard, classic works. It is realized that there have been included in this list some authors who express views foreign to our American way of life, both economically and politically. This has been done purposely on the following premises: The American officer is capable of discerning the truth from falsehood. Ideologically, as well as militarily, it is a good idea to obtain as much information as possible about po- tential opponents. A young reader may find one list of anti-American authors in an article by Mr. Burton Rascoe in the May, 1951, issue of "American Legion" magazine. This list is admittedly brief; many fine books have been omitted and some sub-standard ones included. It is requested that any officer who feels a work has universal value for Army officers or finds a better authority of items covered report it with reasons for recom- mendation to the Department of Military Art, The Engineer School, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, for inclusion -in future revisions of this list.
