Together with Dr. F. Leslie Campbell, I have proposed Dr. Horace :kdy it ei
Craig, Jr., for membership in the Cosmos Club. I am taking the 13baert3:3f
addressing you because I believe you knew Craig when he was an officer :i
the Army during the last war, and know that he is now Civilian Coxultarr t
the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I am hopeful that you will be willing to hell) u
secure his election to the Cosmos Club.
Admission to the Club is based on the achievements of the candidate.
According to the by-laws, the Club shall be composed of men, (a) lio have
done meritorious original work in science, literature or the fine arts; :r
(b) Who, though not occupied in science, literature or the fine arts, are
well known to be cultivated in a specific department thereof; or (c) Who
are recognized as distinguished in a learned profession or in publi. se-vi
We believe that Dr. Craig, qualifies from the scholarly standpoint
under (a) and will propose his name under that category. However, the w,rw
limited his productive work in comparative literature. We, therefore,
seek to qualify him also under (c) in public service. In this we inclutie
his army career and his subsequent service as a consultant.
For your information I enclose a copy of the brief that has been stab
mitted to the Co mittee on Admissions. I hope you will be willing to
write to this Committee at the Cosmos Club, 1520 H St., N. W., Washa.ngtcr
and give them your estimate of the value of Dr. Craig's service as an all
officer and as a Civilian Consultant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I as
confident that your letter will have great weight in qualifying Dr. Craii
for membership.
