Re: John Paton Davies, Jr.
This is to confirm the results of our conversations of
August 26, 1952, with Mr. Allen Dulles and Mr. Loftus Becker of
your Agency, concerning the above-entitled matter.
Messrs. Dulles and Becker were advised that in the event
it developed that the matter should be presented to a grand and
petit jury it would be necessary for the Department of Justice to
make available as witnesses certain former and present agents of
your organization. They were further advised that in such an
event there would be a disclosure of the nature of the operation
which was under consideration by your Agency and the State Depart-
ment at the time of the meetings between Davies and your agents.
Finally, they were advised that it would of necessity mean the
disclosure of the identity 25X1
but also the identities of rLDDI onlyl 25X1
It is my understanding that the official position of
your Agency is that nothing should be undertaken by the Department
of Justice by way of prosecutive action which would tend to dis-
close the identities of your agents and further that nothing should
be undertaken along such lines which would lead to the disclosure
of the nature of the operation which was under discussion at the
meetings between Davies and your representatives.
It is also my understanding that you have no objection
to appropriate private interviews with
provided that such interviews do not lead to the public disclosure
of their identities or of the nature of the operation discussed
at the above-mentioned meetings.
