Upon the approach of the 100th Anniversary, in 1956, of the
birth of Woodrow Wilson, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation has
assumed the major responsibility of stimulating and coordi-
nating the plans for the observance of the Centennial.
The Board of Directors is in the process of establishing a
National Citizens Committee. This Committee will contain the
present Board as members and will have added leading citizens
and representatives of organizations and educational institu-
tions throughout the country. Among these are the Woodrow
Wilson Birthplace Foundation, the Virginia State Centennial
Commission, the Washington Cathedral and the Woodrow Wilson
Centennial Celebration Commission, recently authorized by
Congress and appointed by the President.
On behalf of the Directors, I have the honor and the pleasure
of inviting you to be a member of the National Citizens Commit-
tee. Under its aegis the various programs will be coordinated
and many new ones stimulated. Your wide experience in national
and international affairs and your allegiance to the Wilson
principles of liberty through constitutional processes and peace
through collective security will be invaluable in sponsoring the
Anniversary programs. We hope we may be able to call on you in-
dividually for advice.
In forming the Foundationts own plans for the Centennial, it
seemed that the Theme: FREEDOM FOR MAN - A WORLD SAFE FOR MANKIND
embodies the principles and ideals of Wilson and would serve as
a stimulating focal point for commemorative programs. With this
in mind, the Foundation will assist organizations, educational
institutions and the general public by providing printed aids,
books, films and other materials.
WOODROW WILSON CENTENNIAL YEAR-1856-1956
"Freedom for Man - A World Safe for Mankind."

Announcement of the Theme, the Centennial plans and the
National Citizens Committee will be made at a reception
at Woodrow Wilson House on May 25th. At this time, the
Directors hope to greet the members of the Committee, as
well as the newly-elected members of the Board and other
distinguished guests.
We hope, therefore, that we may hear from you as soon as
possible and that you will join us in re-examining the
impact of Wilson's ideas today.
Yours sincerely,
Auguut Heckscher
President
