The Hungarian Tele- graphic Agency reports that the Hungarian government issued the following statement in connection with the decision of the Uni- ted Nations Security council, barring Hun- gary's admission into the United Nations: "The Hungarian Government notes with Jeep regret and shock the decision of the United Nations Security council barring Hungary as a member of the United Nations. The Hungarian Government as well as the people of Hungary is perplexed by the decision,. At the same time it takes rogniz.ance, with satisfaction, of the fact that the governments of the Soviet Union, France, Poland, Syria and Colombia, realis- tically appraising the situation of the Hun- garian democracy, voted for its admittance. The Hungarian government considers the accusation, voiced in the Security Council, that it would be unable to fulfill its obliga- tion under the charter of the United Nations baseless and untrue and rejects it categori- tally. The institutions and social life of the Hungarian people underwent profound de- mocratic transformations since the libera- tion. Hundreds of thousands of Hungarian peasants have been liberated from the oppression of the large landlords precisely by that very government which certain 'members of the Security Council accuse of not representing the will of the people. Emphasizing its determination, that under no condition, not even for umber. interference into the internal affairs and institutions of the country, the Hungarian Government reiterates at this time the fact that in Hungary civil and political liberty prevails, the fundamental human rights are honored and all citizens are entitled to freely express their opinion in words or in writing. Millions of peasants and workers today feel free and endowed with full possession of their rights, while between the two wars they lived deprived of their human, civil and economic rights. At that time, none of the great powers, which today voted against Hungary, found it necessary and proper to protest their oppression. The freedom, loving people of Hungary. desirous of peace, greeted with joy and satisfaction the establishment of the United Nations, believing, that an effective organ of preventing international disputes has thus been established. Hunger) anxiously waited for the conclusion of the peace treaty, and later for its ratification, desiring to become a member of the peaceloving peoples at the earliest opportunity. On the basis of its democratic transfor- mation and its selfsacrificing work of re- construction, the Hungarian people con- siders itself rightly entitled to such mem- bership. But now, having been deprived of its international right, it feels, that it is certain members of the Security Council who have rejected the Charter of the United Nations which states that: "We the Peoples of the United Nations Determined to save succeeding genera- tions from the scourge of war, which twicei n our lifetime have brought un- told sorrow to mankind and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights... TO PRACTICE TOLERANCE AND LIVE TOGETHER IN PEACE WITH ONE ANOTHER AS GOOD NEIGHBORS ...do hereby establish" etc. by 13IRE SZABO Increases in American private college tuition fees over the last seven years, as determined by a United States Office of Education survey; arts and sciences-29.3'; in- crease; engineering-32.8 ; dentistry-56.1d. Perhaps Senator Taft will tell us to "go to school less." Portrait of our wonderful "free radio": liberal l'adio commentators now have the grand total of 1i hours weekly on the major networks. There are just three of them left: Cecil Brown, Leland Stowe, and Raymond Swing. ? Spotlight on a fink: James Conroy, UE Local 1237 trade uniOn sponsor of the Liberal Party, doubles as a Thomas-Rankin Committee informer. Conroy's own brother- in-law publicly denounced him for Isis treacherous double- dealing. ? An anti-veteran World War II veteran: Sen. Joseph McCarthy (Rep.-Wise.), a servant of real estate interests. McCarthy has consistently fought against veterans housing needs, opposing both the Taft-Ellender-Wagner housing bill and rent ceilings. ? The Armenian Youth of America sent a collection of records of American folk music and jazz to the Erevan Conservatory in Erevan, the capital of Russian Armenia. Included were discs made by Burl Ives. Josh White, Lead- belly, Frank Sinatra, Fats Waller, Harry James, Hazel_ Scott and Billie Holliday. ? Jazz fans who like the real stuff, don't miss these: the Johnny Blowers combo., at Blowers' place in Astoria, Long Island; Muggsy Spanier at Nick's in Greenwich Village; pianist Jess Stacy and singer-wife Lee Wiley at the Jump Town in Chicago; Duke Ellington at the Paradise Theatre in Detroit from October 24th to 30th... So long for now, hold on 'till next Saturday. ',settee tolerance and of good neighborli- ness in the decision of the majority of the Security Council. The government of the republic of Hun- gary expresses the hope of the entire people when it believes that common sense will prevail and the Security Council will again discuss the application of Hungary and the four other rejected nations. It consider this indispensable not only from the viewpoint of these countries, but much snore so, for the sake of the future and of the effective work of the United Nations. John Haire, M. P. The college; founded by one of his pupils after his death, provided housing, food, clothing, books and tuition fees for peasant boys and girls and the results at- tained surpassed all expecte- tton. The hunger for knowledge in these student's was such, that when they joined the anti- nazi underground in 1940 (of which they became the good and reliable fight- eros during the years of war) they motioned their common studies up to the time of the liberation. After the liberation they started to recruit a new generation of students and by June 1940 there were two colleges in working order, the `Gytirffy' and the 'Petdfl,' housing mostly children: of peasants and workers but also a few bourgeois whose school re- cord and collective spirit pre- destined them for the task they would have to shoulder.
