WILLIAM BENTON PUBLISHER 8 CHAIRMAN March 20, 1961 Last February and March, when Governor Stevenson and I were on a nine-week tour of Latin America,I did not realize how conspicuously Latin America would be in the news only a year later. My 60,000-word article based on this trip is to be featured in the 1961 Britannica Book of the Year which will be off the press in the next week or two and which I am sending you. Later, the article will be brought out by another publisher as a book carrying the same title as the Yearbook piece, "The Voice of Latin America". This title is in- spired by my article of five years ago growing out of my visit to the U.S.S.R., "The Voice of the Kremlin", which title in turn grew from my responsibilities after the war for organizing (and naming!) our Voice of America overseas broadcasting. Britannica's Yearbook records the major events and develop- ments of each year - in some 1,000 articles and 1,000,000 words. An annual supplement to the Britannica, it reports on key and current developments - for example, the 1961 edition reports on the election of President Kennedy, the. U-2 incident, the Paris conference, Mr. Khrushchev at the General Assembly of the U.N., the Congo, Algeria. I hope you may have many an occasion to refer to it. (The 1961 printing of Encyclopaedia Britannica itself, incidentally, has 41,016 articles and nearly 40,000,000 words, of which 8,479,207 words were changed from the 1960 printing - a tremendous editorial output which continues to grow each year, stimulated by the accelerating pace of contemporary life.)
