Dear Allen:
I have just been approached by a very remarkable
group at Yale -- the Yale Russian Chorus -- which is
anxious to tour the Soviet Union this summer.
This group is composed of students, many of them
in the graduate school, who are specializing in the
language, history and culture of Russia.
I understand it is an extremely good singing
chorus. In addition, almost all of them play some kind
of instrument, which enables them to turn out a good
evening of entertainment.
Although there are 16 in the group, the number
could be expanded to around 24. There is a group of
girls at the music school who customarily sing with
them, and they could be included in the group if the
funds are available. They estimate that they could
spend about two months in the Soviet Union for $20,000
to $25,000.
I talked to Dean Rusk of the Rockefellar Foundation
about it and he told me he would also talk to the Ford
people. I hope that they may be able to work it out.
If not, 1 wonder if there is some way of getting money
from other sources?
This is a serious and talented group of young people
and I know that they would be well equipped to handle
themselves effectively with any group of Russians.
I am writing to you because I am about to go away
for a month and it occurred to me that if the Rockefeller
Foundation is unable to handle it, you might know of
other sources of funds. I realize that these things are

difficult to arrange, but knowing your interest in
this exchange effort, I thought you should know about
it.
With my warmest regards.
