At a recent meeting of our Honors Convocation Com-
mittee, there was a unanimous vote to invite you to
address our Honors Convocation next year on Friday,
May the thirteenth. As chairman of the Committee, it
is my pleasant duty to extend this invitation to you.
The meeting is held at Hill Auditorium and recog-
nizes between seven and eight hundred students for their
distinguished scholarship. Recent speakers at these Con-
vocations have been Alistair Cooke, Robert F. Goheen,
Sir Leslie Munro, and Margaret Clapp. It has become tra-
ditional with us to make the Honors Convocation the high
point of the Michigan Schoolmasters' Club meetings, a
three-day assembly of the school teachers of our state.
Our audience will number some four thousand people. The
students who are being honored in many instances reflect
the result of the sound teaching of their high school
teachers who are members of the audience.
President Hatcher joins our Committee in expressing
the hope that you will be able to accept this invitation.
The Convocation speaker is presented an honorarium of
$350.00. I am enclosing a copy of last May's program.

H ONORS CONVOCATIONS have been held by
The University of Michigan annually
since the first was instituted on May 13, 1924,
by President Marion LeRoy Burton. On these
occasions the University publicly recognizes
and commends the undergraduate students in
its schools and colleges who have earned dis-
tinguished academic records. Unfortunately,
both among students and in the public press,
such achievement is likely to receive far less
recognition than does prominence in extra-
curricular activities. It is accordingly appro-
priate that those students be honored who
have most clearly and effectively recognized
the first reason for a university's existence-
to offer educational opportunities at the high-
est possible level. The Honors Convocation,
therefore, takes rank with the Commencement
exercises among the important ceremonies of
the University year.
The names of students who are honored this
year for outstanding achievement in their
studies are printed here. They are those who
have earned records for the last two semesters
equivalent to at least half A and half B.
Freshmen have been judged only on first-
semester grades.
James B. Angell scholars (students with an
all-A record for two consecutive semesters)
are given a special place in the program.
To all honor students, and to their parents,
the University extends its hearty congratu-
lations.

Yellow the stars as they ride thro' the night,
And reel in a rollicking crew;
