ER-8-2041/A Honorable Timothy P. Sheehan House of Representatives Washington 25. D. C. a :;ear Mr. Sheehan: Thank you for Your thoughtful letter of Z6 April 1956, concerning the Katyn Forest massacre and recent develop,. rnents within Poland. I can assure you that vigorous actions have been taken to acquaint the Polish people with the findings of the Select Committee's excellent report on the Latyn Forest massacre, particularly since the denunciation of Stalin began. For reasons I am sure you will understand. I cannot divulge the details of these actions. I can state, however, that we agree fully with you that. recent developments behind the Iron Curtain are of great significance, and provide new and considerable opportunities for exposing in its true light the nature of the Communist leadership which presently dominates these areas. Your interest in this matter is greatly appreciated. Sincerely,, uns C oncu~d i J1phone by - C:hipf/aTn/rir%,n g er w a s is .- 2 - Legis Ca 1 Allen W. April 26, 1956 Mr. Allen W. Dulles Director Central Intelligence Agency 2430 E Street, Northwest Washington 25, D. C. Dear Mr. Dulles: COMMITTEES: MERCHANT MARINE AND FISHERIES SELECT COMMITTEE ON SMALL BUSINESS As you are aware, the various Communist-controlled governments of Europe are busily denouncing the former dictator Stalin for his misrule and purges of the Russian people. The daily papers reported that the present military powers in Russia are criticizing Stalin regarding his purge of 5,000 Soviet officers before World War II. In a similar manner, Stalin is responsible for the Katyn Forest Massacre, wherein an estimated 4,243 of a total of 15,400 Polish Army officers and intellectual leaders captured by the Russians were found murdered. A Select Congressional Committee, formed as a result of my intro- duction of a resolution calling for an investigation of the Katyn Forest Massacre, established that the Russian Government was responsible for this atrocity. In view of the present denunciations of Stalin by the present Warsaw Polish Government, has your Agency attempted to use these facts in such a manner as to embarrass the present Communist regime in Poland, or to obtain an admission from it that Stalin ordered the mass execution of the intelligentsia of Poland? I am sure that such action, properly handled, would have a desirable effect on the Polish people, causing them to increase their contempt for the Russian leaders and the Russian sponsored rulers of Poland. Very truly yours, 4:_ TPS:MF Timothy P.
