Approve .For Release 2004/08/30: CIA-RDP80 20R000500030041-5 ZI April 1966 Mr. Bill D. Moyers Special Assistant to the President The White House The attached clipping was enclosed in a letter from my parents which arrived yesterday. You may have already seen it. If not, you will find it most interesting and, perhaps, useful. This is your department and not one in which I have any official. responsibilities, but in my private. personal opinion James' action has a strong element of newsworthy drama; his arguments are hard hitting, well phrased and persuasive; and his own background and impeccable credentials as a liberal Democrat might command the attention of at least some other liberal Democrats now straying off the reservation. I met Weldon James once in the fall of 1953 at a testimonial dinner for a local (Louisville) sports writer where I was one of the speakers (asked because of my activity on the Yale and Oxford crews). James came up after the program, introduced himself, and chatted for a few minutes. Our conversation was fairly inconsequential and not devoted to politics but I remember sizing him up as an earnest, intelligent Stevensonian Democrat of more or less conventional liberal views. (Here you are getting the bias of a moderate, pragmatic Republican who in those days, was an Eisenhower supporter.) James obviously has more substance and intensity of conviction than I gave him credit for twelve and a half years ago. Sincerely yours, ls/ George A.
