1'JC~ Approved (g Reta~~1 RR, 6W 2 28 July 1969 Morning Meeting of 28 July 1969 DD/I reported on the establishment of a working group to under- take a systematic analysis of the possibilities of a Soviet attack on China. He recalled earlier experience with "prediction models" and noted that the working group just established will be reporting twice weekly. In response to General Cushman's question eported that the work of this group is pertinent to the Watch Committee. DD/I noted that a survey of twelve months' operations has con- cluded that only 20-25 percent of drone flights over North Vietnam have been unsuccessful. Godfrey called attention to a London Reuters report that the Soviets might undertake a joint Soviet/Czech exercise on the anniversary of the Czech invasion. Godfrey pointed to the item in today's CIB and briefed on evidence that Israeli attacks on Egypt may have had the effect of improving Nasser's relationships with his own military. D/ONE noted that they are preparing a memorandum which may characterize the Israeli/ Egyptian conflict as a new kind of war. D/ONE gave a status report on the preparation of NIE 11-8. 5X1 5X1 Maury reported that the Zablocki Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee would like the Director to brief on Soviet MIRV testing on 31 July. In response to the Director's question Maury reported that the Director is scheduled to appear before the full House Armed Services Committee tomorrow morning. The Director asked that Carver be present. X1 Maury reported receipt of a request from Senator Jackson's office seeking to confirm Senator Fulbright's information on the percentage of Soviet gross national product devoted to defense/arms expenditures. Houston called attention to the death of Corey Ford as reported in today's New York Times. Bross noted that has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Educational Aid Fund and has volunteered to meet with the Deputies' representatives on the Board. DD/S&T related that Agency officers have been selected to chair all working committees which are drafting community papers on the verification problem. Executive Director briefed on the outstanding performances turned in by the Agency's most recent crop of attendees at the National War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. In response to the Director's question Houston reported on his review of the Director's transcript before the Ervin Subcommittee. He noted that it may be very difficult to sanitize the transcript, and the Director asked that an early recommendation be made on whether it is to be sanitized and, if not, on what grounds this decision was made. *The Director noted that information from the Executive Officers Group conference in Charlottesville, the present 10 percent cut exercise, Approved For Rene, 2AWtl and the President's statement from Guam suggest money and people will be tight by FY 71. He asked that we give careful attention to the implications by taking a hard look at marginal projects and people. He said we must realize that some of our activities are indeed less im- portant than others. H., July 27- Corey Ford, the humorist who was also a sportsman and pro- digious writer, died in the Dart- mouth College infirmary here today. He was 67 years old and had suffered a stroke last Thursday. Mr. Ford, author of more than 30 books and 500 maga- zine articles, was an associate editor and columnist for Field and Stream Magazine. His col- umn was called "Lower 40," and in it he often wrote hu- morously of the Lower 40 Shooting, Angling and Inside Straight Club. He leaves no immediate sur- vivors. A private service and burial are being arranged by the Rand Funeral Home in Han- over, in accordance with Mr. Ford's wishes.
