was on leave from the office of Training from STAT
January to the first of July this year to serve on the staff of the Ford
Foundation Board on Overseas Training and Research, in Mr. Spaeth's
Division of Overseas Activities. was invited to serve in STAT
this capacity by Mr. Spaeth and Mr. John Weiss, Secretary of the Board,
and his leave was approved by 1vIr. Baird, after conversation with
Mr. Wisner, in the belief that this experience would be mutually
beneficial. was asked to investigate the possibilities STAT
of drawing into the Boar s research program on Asia and the #Tear East
more candidates from Government, Labor, and Business. He reported to
the Board in June that not many applicants could be expected from
Business for a scholarly fellowship program in area-and-language research,
but that the corporations having interests overseas were very much
interested in the problem of finding men who are better qualified to
undertake overseas assignments, and he recommended that the Board assist
in developing training centers for Americans planning to live, work and
study abroad.
