Dear Stoddard:
Referring to our recent conversations and to your
letter of 2 December, I am delighted to hear that the Old
Dominion Foundation is considering a grant to the aver-all
estimated cost of preparing and publishing a history of the
0SS. This project has our wholehearted approval and backing
an indicated in the attached letter of it August 1958, which I
wrote to Whitney Shepardsen at the time he agreed to undoi -
take this task, assuming that appropriate financing was
arranged.
As indicated in this letter we will grant all faciliti3s
to Whitney in the preparation of this work and it is understcod
with Whitney that he will confer with us with respect to any
security issues involved in the publication. Meanwhile, hew-
ever, we expect to open up the 038$ records to him on a very
liberal basis.
If you feel it would be of any help, I would be very glad
to write Paul Mellon at the Old Dominion Foundation, but
possibly this letter to you will suffice.

Enclosed is a statement of the project
to prepare and publish a history of the O.S.S.,
about which I spoke to you yesterday and on the
telephone last week.
Old Dominion Foundation has been consider-
ing the desirability of making a $10,000 con-
tribution to the over-all estimated cost of
$44,000.
It was nice to see you on Monday.
