Devoted to the cause of liberty, Lafayette, together with
many of his fellow citizens, came to our support at a time when
we desperately needed aid. On many occasions since, Ameri-
cans and Frenchmen, side by side, have joined in the defense
of their land's and freedom.
We cherish the historic friendship between the Republic
of France and the United States of America. This bond adds

The basis of the Lafayette Fellowship Foundation, Inc. is the conviction
that in the present struggle for men's minds, it is vital that potential
leaders of the French nation develop a better understanding of America.
To this end, the Lafayette Fellowship Foundation was established to
provide two-year scholarships to exceptionally gifted young French stu-
dents for graduate studies in American universities. Our program affords
these young people the opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge of
American social and economic organization, which it is hoped will prove
of mutual benefit when they participate in the political and economic life
of their own country.
This program provides a unique opportunity to perform a service of
great value in our own national interest. It carries on the tradition of the
\iarquis de Lafayette who once said, "Liberty must always be a living
tflin~_r' never laid away in the archives.'
