To this end, the Lafayette Fellowship Foundation was established to provide two-year scholarships to exceptionally gifted young French stu- dents for graduate studies in American universities. Our program affords these young people the opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge of American social and economic organization, which it is hoped will prove of mutual benefit when they participate in the political and economic life of their own country. This program provides a unique opportunity to perform a service of great value in our own national interest. It carries on the tradition of the \iarquis de Lafayette who once said, "Liberty must always be a living tflin~_r' never laid away in the archives.'
