We are returning from the first sea trials of the USS ETHAN
ALLEN, SSB(N)608. This is our twenty-first nuclear powered
submarine, and the sixth equipped to fire Polaris missiles.
The ETHAN ALLEN was designed and built by the Electric Boat
Division, Groton, Connecticut. She is the first Polaris submarine
designed from the outset as a missile firing submarine; the previous
five were modifications of attack submarine designs.
With approval of the thirteen submarines in the Fiscal Year 1962
shipbuilding program, the Navy will have twenty-nine Polaris and
thirty-two attack nuclear submarines in operation, under construction,
or authorized.
