JULIEN BRYAN announces
a new color film
TROPICAL AFRICA
29 minutes, sound, color; Sale Price $250.00 Rental $10.00
Produced by: International Film Foundation and the
Twentieth Century Fund under direc-
tion of William Claiborne
Photography: Julien and Sam Bryan
Original Score: Norman Lloyd
Animation: Philip Stapp
Editorial Consultant: Dr. George H. T. Kimble
No area in the world is more in the public eye today than Africa. And no continent is so little known
and so much misunderstood. The old films of adventure and animal life gave a one sided and often
distorted picture. It is also true that many of the pictures made to enlist support for Christian missions
were somewhat biased. Our new documentary film entitled "Tropical Africa" encompasses three
quarters of the great African continent. It is a frank attempt to make an intelligent primer, a stimu-
lating introduction to that area of the world. Dismissing the pygmies and big game, we attempt
to show the new Africa, a continent in political revolution and undergoing great social change. Primi-
tive society is, of course, portrayed but only as it relates to the new life. The great movement is to
the cities, to the new factories and mines. The struggle for self-government, the effort to establish
schools, universities and hospitals, all these are shown as well as the rapidly changing relationship
between black and white African.
The artist, Philip Stapp producer of two famous films, "Boundary Lines" and "Picture in Your Mind",
has created an extraordinary four minute animation sequence highlighting the history of Africa over
3000 years. The composer, Norman Lloyd has taken African themes and developed them into a
splendid original score. William Claiborne has supervised the editing and production of this film
and written the narration. This is his fifth film for International Film Foundation and Julien Bryan.
To insure meticulous accuracy in the script, Dr. George H. T. Kimble of Indiana University, author of
the recently published Twentieth Century Fund study "Tropical Africa," has given many hours of his
time in editorial consultation. International Film Foundation is grateful to him and to the Twentieth
Century Fund for this cooperation. The officers of International Film Foundation also wish to thank
the Twentieth Century Fund for their generous financial support which made possible the completion
of this picture.

Remarks :
Frank,
We have screened the attached film which
is a rather well done travelogue on Africa
South of the Sahara. I do not believe that
the Director himself should take the time to
view the film. As a matter of fact, the Agency
has another copy which will be available at any
time from ORR.
Attached is a thank you note from the DCI
to Mr. Bryan.
