Elder Assistant to the Director SUBJECT: American Assembly 1. The following information on the American Assembly was given to me by Robert Packard, Office of the Special Assistant for Atomic Energy and Outer Space, Department of State. The American Assembly is composed of a group of private citizens who are especially interested in contemporary problems. The group is headed by Dr. Wriston, formerly President of Brown University. Apparently, the organization was origi- nally of interest to Averell Harriman and has sponsored meetings at Arden House, formerly the Harriman estate. 2. American Assembly has a small permanent staff headquartered in New York City, which is principally concerned with organizing meetings and seminars bringing together well-known Americans. The organization's program for this year is concerned with the "implications of outer space. " Meetings have been held at Arden House and other places in the United States. 3. The Assembly has organized a meeting to be held at Brighton, England, the co-sponsor of which is to be a British organization. That meeting will be known as the European -American Assembly. The meeting will be an invitation-only affair. About thirty to forty Americans have been invited, including John McCloy, John Johnson, General Counsel of NASA, and Herman Phleger, an international lawyer from California, formerly with the Department of State. Other participants from Europe will represent the academic, scientific, industrial, and governmental fields. Mr. Packard did not know whether representatives from Eastern Europe would be present.
