Approved For Release 2003/06/26,-: 'C1A=RDP80B01676R002700010039-2 Mr. Rowan Gaither, Chairman of the Board, Ford Foundation, telephoned today to state that they had tentatively decided upon a program for Poland involving the bring/ofgPolish professors, intellectuals, and students to the USA and sending certain American teachers to Poland. Under this program, the financial outlays would be carefully controlled and payable largely in dollars to the individual Polish and Americans concerned as they went respectively to the USA. or Poland. They had in mind something in the nature of $500 thousand on an annual basis but without any long term commitment. Mr. Gaither indicated that the State Department had encouraged them to go ahead with the program and he wished to get any final word we might have. I told him that I was strongly for the program pro- vided, as seemed to be the case, there was no long range commitment which would embarrass the Foundation in the event of a change in the Polish situation. I said I would mention this at the OCB Meeting today and call him back later in the afternoon. I asked him about the Magsaysay matter. He said they were considering that and he might have some word for me later in the day. He also added that they had asked one of their men who is in the Far East to change his itinerary and to go to Manila have a look at the situation. ~ 14 - "Reek JZ4~ Approved For Release 2003/06/26 : CIA-RDP80B01676R002700010039-2 a7oa38
