2 August 1957
At the Deputies' Meeting on 2 August 1957 Mr. Wisner noted that the
deterioration of the situation in Indonesia is being viewed with the utmost
gravity in the highest circles of the U. S. government. It was discussed at
the NSC meeting on 1 August and was also the subject of a high level meeting
between representatives of the Department of State and CIA. Mr. Wisner
said that after these meetings he had received a call from Walter Robertson
who stated that Stewart Alsop had approached a fairly low level member of the
Department and had asked rather pointed questions about the U. S. policy
toward this area. He said there was a distinct innuendo on the part of
Mr. Robertson that there had been a leak to Alsop stemming from the
discussion at the NSC on the talks between State and CIA or both. He noted
Mr. Robertson showed signs of extreme agitation about this matter. Mr.
Amory commented that it would be no great trick for an alert writer to read
the newspapers and realize that something is going on in Indonesia. Mr.
noted that he had seen Stewart Alsop on Wednesday night, 31 August,
and at that time A.lsop indicated he intended to do a column on Indonesia.
Mr. II made it plain that Alsop did not query him in any way shape or
form on Indonesia. (Mr. Wisner will pass this information along to
Mr. Robertson.) ACTION: General Cabell directed that for the next few
days and at least until the dust has settled, discussions about Indonesia be
held with only those people authorized to participate.
