MEMORANDUM FOR: Mr. Paul Chretien
I presume the attached letter should be answered by someone
and I should think you would be the best bet. In any event, I think
the answer should be as follows:
"In response to your request for updating the 1965
Bulletin Almanac, the information is as follows:
The new Federal Executive Salary Act of 1964
recently passed by the Congress establishes the
position of Director of Central Intelligence in Grade
Level II at a salary of $30, 000.00, and the position
of Deputy Director of Central Intelligence at Grade
Level III at salary of $28, 500.00. "
Regardless of how you word the foregoing I do not think
it appropriate to mention either Mr. McCone or me by name
but to tie the salary strictly into the title of the position in
accordance with the legislation. Whether or not we actually
receive that salary (i. e. am I paid as a Lieutenant General or
in accordance with the Salary Act) should not be a matter of
comment to Mr. Murphy.
