2. In the weekly meeting of FE officers with State counterparts
on 21 January, Colby gave Mendenhall a copy of a DD/I Collection
Guidance Staff study on the problems of intelligence reporting in SVN.
Mendenhall said he would try to take up specific requirements on the
Vietnam Task Force and send them out to the Country Team. for
implementation. Left hanging although the meeting took note of the
subject was the possibility of a more formal group of Washington
officials to go to Saigon to. survey the reporting structure there.
3. The Oreports that RFE gave heavy coverage to the
Pope's visit to the Holy Land. Listeners in Poland were apparently
numerous and the Polish Broadcasting System apparently decided
at a late hour to provide some coverage of its own. They had problems
in this regard, however, since there were no Polish newsmen with
the Pope's party. The Polish reverted to taping RFE's background
sounds of the Pope's visit and inserting the sounds into their own
programs. This dubbing even included several seconds of a Mass
conducted by the Pope--the first time since 1956 that even this much
religion has been carried on the Polish radio.
