HEADQUARTERS CONTINENTAL ARMY COMMAND
OFFICE OF THE COMMANDING GENERAL
FORT MONROE,VIRGINIA
30 March 1956
I was at our Chaplain's School, Fort Slocum, the
other day and my attention was invited to our most
recent Collier's Magazine, in which there is an article
by Toynbee, "Man owes his freedom to God." I read the
article when I was flying back from New York and having
read it I wondered if any of our operating agencies are
using religion in its cold war effort. The objectives
of Christianity, Judaism, Mohammedism and the various
facets of the Buddhist area are basically the same.
I wonder what the result would be if we could get
people like our philosopher, Niebuhr at Columbia Univer-
sity, the Pope, the Dalai-lama and the head of the
Mohammedan religion together. Toynbee has something.
I keep running across your people and my old
friends from time to time and always with great
pleasure.
With warm good wishes,
Faithfully,
General, U.S. Army
