He handed it back to me and asked me to see what General Cabell thought about it. I talked to the General and his view was that we should just file and forget unless the question is raised again. General Cabell said we were clearly on record with General Erskine as not desiring to participate in this particular briefing so, unless the Director does wish to go further and talk to Secretary Gates as a matter of courtesy, no further action is required. McNamara, the Secretary of Defense-designate, within the field of intelligence and its relationships within the intelligence community. The time set for the briefing has not been determined. It is indicated, however, that the briefing will be scheduled subsequent to January 3, 1961. You will be informed of the scheduled time for the briefing for Mr. McNamara as soon as the Department of Defense schedule of briefings has been made firm. A tentative schedule of briefings, with allocations of time, is set forth in the attachment hereto. It is desired that a rehearsal of the Defense Department brief- ings be held on December 29th in the Office of Special Operations, Room 3E-114, commencing at 0930.
