SUBJECT: (U) Foreign Missile and Space Activities
T0: Director of Central Intelligence
1. In response to DOD Directive 5100.43, dated 27 April
1964, the Defense Special Missile and Astronautics Center
(Defense/SMAC) will become operational on 1 June 1964.
The Defense/SMAC will replace the former NSA/SMAC and will
be operated jointly by the Directors, DIA and NSA.
2. The Secretary of Defense, by letter dated 27 April
1964 to the Director of Central Intelligence, encouraged
the participation of the Central Intelligence Agency in
the Defense/SMAC. Accordingly, with a view toward improv-
ing DOD-CIA coordination and mutual support, General Blake
and I invite you to provide participating representation.
