SUBJECT: Request for Updating of National Intelligence Estimate
10-58, "Anti-Communist Resistance Potential in the
Sino-Soviet Bloc" (C)

1. (S) The Defense Intelligence Agency, in order to satisfy the
requirements levied upon it, has a pressing need for a current study
of anti-Communist resistance potential in the Communist World. For
a variety of reasons, the study must have the stature, impact, and
distribution of a national intelligence estimate.
2. (S) NIE 10-58 was prepared in the era prior to the Sino-Soviet
split. It is now felt that two national estimates should be pre-
pared; one dealing with the USSR and Eastern Europe, the other with
the Asian Communists.
3. (S) In view of the need for such estimates, and the exceptionally
long time since NIE 10-58 was issued, it is requested that the new
estimates be prepared early in 1966, at the latest.
