MEMORANDUM FOR THE CHAIRMAN., UNITED STATES INTELLIGENCE
BOARD
SUBJECT: Proposal for a SNIE on the Arms Picture in the
Near East (C)
:L. (S/NFD) In line with a suggestion by the Deputy
Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security
Affairs, Near East and. South Asia Region (ISA/NESA), it
is requested that a Special National Intelligence Estimate
on the arms picture in the Near East be prepared on a
priority basis to meet the requirements of US policy
planners for information on which to base decisions on
future arms sales to Israel and the Arab states. The
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (ISA/NESA) states
that the Office of Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs
in the Department of State and the Director J-5 (Plans
and Policy), Joint Staff, agree that such an analysis is
needed.
2. (U) The subject matter to be covered, as received
from ISA, is attached (Enclosure 1).
