I believe that returning Volunteers who have completed their
service under the Peace Corps Act are exactly the caliber of
men and women who should be encouraged to pursue careers
with the Federal Government. They have already fully demon-
strated their dedication and intelligence in the service of their
country. We should do our level best to continue making full
use of their talent and experience.
By October over 3, 000 Peace Corps Volunteers will have
completed their service in the developing nations of Africa, Asia
and Latin America. I am most anxious that the Federal agencies
take active steps to recruit the best of these returning Volunteers
for positions both at home and abroad.
I would, therefore, like to be personally informed as to how
many former Peace Corps Volunteers are employed within each
department or agency and what measures you anticipate taking to
increase this number during the coming fiscal year.
P. S. I would like a report on this by September 1, 1964.
