Because of the nature and scope of the worldwide Soviet and Communist intelligence network, I am concerned over the possible threat posed by these specific individuals and others who may be in a similar status. Attached is a list of the specific individuals to whom I refer. Although we have conducted limited records checks on these individuals in the past and have some limited data concerning their backgrounds and activities, I would appreciate any recent information you may have which indicates that they may have intelligence connections or are possibly engaging in intelligence activities. I am also interested in. any similar information you may have concerning Correspondents from other nations who may be suspected of working for or cooperating with hostile intelligence agencies. If appropriate, I would appreciate a current summary of each person concerned. Since my purpose is to make a realistic appraisal of the security threat presented by possible hostile agents or other persons having ostensible authorized access to the White House (e. g. via Press Passes), I would appreciate any other pertinent information you may have concerning this overall problem as well as your personal views. I feel that this subject matter should be appropriately covered in the Agency's next annual report to the Board, to which you referred. However, the submission of such annual reports is not to be considered as a substitute for detailed reports which are required from time to time by this office and by the President's Board, as a basis for appraising the actions taken or views expressed by responsible agencies of the intelligence community with respect to recommendations which the Board has made to the President. Accordingly, at an appropriate interval following the submission of the Central Intelligence Agency's next annual report to the Board, I will look to the Board for suggestions as to the desirability of request- ing a further progress report on actions taken by the Agency in the scientific and technological areas covered by the Board in its March 1963 recommendations.
