1. With regard to your memorandum of 6 May concerning
intelligence activities in Southeast Asia, I would be pleased to
have Mr. William Colby, Chief of our Far East Division, brief
General Johnson at the latter's convenience. I assume that you
would be present to cover those rnatters of specific concern to
Army intelligence.

MEMORANDUM FOR: DIRECTOR, CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
SUBJECT: Intelligence Activities in Southeast Asia (U)
1. (S) Chief of Staff, United States Army has recently re-
emphasized his continued concern and interest in the effectiveness of
intelligence operations in Viet Nam and Thailand. In particular, he
has requested information concerning the extent and effectiveness of
penetration of the Communist infrastructure in each of the two countries.
2. (S) In view of General Johnsonls strong interest, I want to
provide him with the most accurate picture possible of the United
States national effort, rather than with information dealing only with
the military intelligence effort. Personnel from your staff have been
helpful in the past in meeting with me and discussing intelligence
activities in Southeast Asia. However, in order to present General
Johnson with current and complete information, I would appreciate it
if you would arrange a briefing at the earliest possible date covering
the extent and effectiveness of your current efforts to penetrate
the Communist infrastructure in Viet Nam and Thailand, the nature of
any planned expansion of efforts in these areas, and any recommendations
you may have for further cooperation between the Army and your agency
in solving the problems which we face in Southeast Asia.
