In reply to your letter of 15 April 1964, this Agency since
1947 has conducted or contracted for extensive research studies in
the use of the polygraph as an aid in fulfilling the security respon-
sibilities assigned to the Director of Central Intelligence in both our
personnel and operational security programs.
You will appreciate. I am sure. that these studies, because of
their application to the requirements of this Agency, are classified in
nature. For this reason. and if acceptable to you, I would prefer to
review the nature and scope of Agency research in this field initially
with you_personally or with members of your staff whom you may wish
to designate for this purpose.
