The President today announced his intention to nominate Randolph Appleton Kidder of
the District of Columbia as the United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Mr. Kidder will replace Ambassador Philip D. Sprouse, who is being reassigned.
Born at Ipswich, Massachusetts, on July 6 1913, Mr. Kidder received a Bachelor's
degree from Harvard University in 1935. He subsequently studied at the University of
Grenoble (France) and the University of Jena ,(Germany) and attended 1' Ecole Libre des
Sciences Politiques (Paris) from 1935 to 1937. Mr. Kidder entered the Foreign Service
in 1938 and from that year to 1949 served in a variety of consular and diplomatic
assignments in Canada, Australia and Brazil.
In 1949 Mr. Kidder served as Advisor to the U. S. Delegation to the Fourth Session of
the General Assembly of the United Nations. He was named Officer-in-Charge of
Brazilian Affairs in 1950 and attended the National War College in 1952. Mr. Kidder
was appointed First Secretary and Consul at Saigon, Phnom Penh and Vientiane in 1953,
and in 1954 he became Counselor of Embassy and Deputy Chief of Mission at Saigon.
He returned to the Department in 1955 to serve as Special Assistant to the Deputy Under
Secretary of State for Administration. He was named Counselor of Embassy for
Political Affairs at Paris in 1958 and remained there until 1962 when he was named a
Senior Foreign Service Inspector in the Department of State. He is married to the
former Dorothy Douglas Robinson. They have two children, Michael R. and Charlotte.

KIDDER, Randolph Appleton
Randolph Appleton Kidder was born in Massachusetts
on 6 July 1913. He is a graduate of Harvard University
(S.B. 1935). He attended the University of Grenoble,
France, in 1935; The Ecole Libre des Sciences Politiques,
Paris, France, from 1935 to 1937; and the University of
Jena, Germany, during the summer of 1936. He is married,
and he speaks French.
