Approved For Release 2002/08/21 CIA=RDP80801676R000200140064-5 Ii May 1962 SUBJECT Conversation with Allen Dulles Concerning His Book This aftsxnson I talked to Mr. Dulles concerning the procedure which will be agreeable to CIA in connection with his book, 1. Under the consulting contract, all of his clearances were open and therefore be could review any and all classified information which he desired #a order to refresh his memory on incidents in the past. However. he naturally was not privileged to pass this informa- tion on to Charles Murphy. 2. He should fool free to discuss any matters with any members of CIA. He mentioned particularly Helms and Angleton.. 3. An office in East Building would be made available to him for the purpose of reviewing classified information thereby eliminating the necessity of removing it from the promises and also interviewing members of the staff or others. 4. Secretarial and Library service would be made available to him on an as needed" basis. 5. It was perfectly agreeable with us if he worked with Charles Murphy, however, his doing so might raise some question at the White House but I urged that he proceed with Murphy as I fool that the problems with Murphy at the White House will be resolved in the near future. 6. 1 reiterated the previous statements that I was concerned that he or particularly Murphy might be tempted to use to publish classified information previously published by Sculz, Tully or others in order to strengthen certain points in the book. I urged that he, Dulles, not permit the project to veer in that direction as doing so would Vaise serious problems with us. Mr. Dulles understiod this point and agreed thoroughly with my position. 7. Finally, I said that we favored the book and thought it wArr in the national interest that it be published and felt justified in giving grit above support. For your information, Mr. Dulles is to arrange an 25X6 Apprjj (d for Release 2002/08/21 : CIA-RDP80B01676R000200140064-7 Approved For Release 2002/08/21 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R000200140064-7 independent office so his use of the office in the East Building will be for the purposes indicated above.
