Dear Mr. Kennedy:
What a shock to read in the New York Times this
morning that the Central Intelligence Agency has been pay-
ing and will continue to pay three million dollars a year
to the Special Forces in Vietnam.
Mr. Kennedy, do you wonder that the governments and
peoples do the countries we "help" with such clandestine
tyranny do not believe our talk of the Free World and our
quoting the Constitution and founding fathers to them? Can
you seriously wonder that the Vietcong has sympathizers in
South Vietnam?
What to me is the greatest pain of all, however, is
the cynicism this sort of action breeds at home, where wee
too know that in so many places we are not fighting for the
Free World at all: we look with frustration and contempt on
the political speeches that pretend we are, and with fear on
the men who thus strangle our self-confidence and self-esteem
as if they have lost faith in the country's creed.
We can only thank God for the Peace Corps, support the
United Nations, and hope that they too are receiving vast sums
more than we know about, from some group whose self-interest
is more enlightened than the CIA's.
