MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director for Intelligence
FROM: Director of Central Intelligence
SUBJECT: Presidential Meeting, 3 May 1977
1. In conjunction with my briefing to the President on
the new SLBM/SSBN, he asked me whether the new SSBN that the
Soviets are probably building is going to be larger than a
Trident. He also asked for comparisons of the size of the
expected missile (2.8 meters from the pop-up barge) with Trident
C3, 4 and 5. I only had data on the C5 at 2.08 meters. Would
appreciate any fill-in.
2. Regarding my briefing to him on Soviet nuclear power
production, he asked if most of their plants are in the thousand
megawatt category. I didn't know. Would you let me know?
3. Twice the President has mentioned to me "rhodium" and
the role it may play as a substitute for the platinum group
minerals (as I understand it). Could you have someone elaborate
for me on what rhodium is and how it may be used?
4. With respect to the briefing paper for the President
on the Soviet Nuclear Power Program, he asked me the following
questions:
a. Is the Soviet enriched uranium as rich
as ours?
b. What constraints do they put on the
Eastern Europeans and Finns to whom they sell
reactors with regard to the spent fuel?
c. Do the Soviets in general use a different
fuel in their reactors than we?
