The country seminar on Indonesia--the first in the series proposed by the Executive Director/Comptroller 25X1 --was held on 2 and 3 November at It involved a total of 13 persons at two sessions and 12 persons in a third. 25X1 STAT '25X1 3. The other participants may also take a bow. Each brought a particular approach or a specialized knowledge to the discussion, and the consequent exchange broadened each person's understanding of Indonesia. Other than I I who carried the major burden of the discussion, ree persons spoke briefly from their par- ticular vantage p i - of FBIS on the Indonesian press, of OER on the Indonesian economy, and of FBIS on Chinese and Soviet propaganda directed at Indonesia. Other partici- pants contributed to the discussion as it progressed. The agenda provided a needed frame for the dis- cussion while at the same time, it permitted ample flexibility. Actually the exchange turned out to be concentrated and to the point, and the entire agenda-- ambitious though it appeared--was covered. 5. Reactions to the seminar were uniformly favorable. The most enthusiastic comment was that "I gained more of a grasp of Indonesia in 24 hours than I could in six months Most felt they had learned much about it from new perspectives, had enjoyed the exchange, and had profited from meeting other persons in the Agency who work on the area. Even those who had been doubtful about the usefulness of the seminar changed their minds and were glad they had come. 6. proved to be a congenial setting for a seminar of t is size. Although the cottage can accommodate 18, it can be made more comfortable if used by a somewhat smaller group such as this one. Meals were pro- vided at the mess hall, and members of the seminar seemed to enjoy the short walk from the cottage.
